Instructor: Dr. McEwen
This is a study of Europe in the throes of change, of a civilization caught up in a rapid succession of wars, revolutions, economic and social crises -- and ultimate renewal under radically altered domestic and world conditions. Along with high politics and diplomacy, world wars, Communist and Fascist revolutions, the course will also focus on every-day preoccupations of ordinary people, and the increasing significance of their aspirations and values in Europe since 1945. The course will be of the lecture-discussion format with opportunities for pursuing individual interests. There will be assigned common reading, collateral reading of the student's own choice, one mid-term and a final examination.
