Jan Powers, PhD

Assistant Professor

Program Director, School Counseling

Jan Powers is a veteran educator and school counselor who completed the doctoral program in Counselor Education and Supervision at the University of Iowa.  Dr. Powers’ research interests are trauma-informed practices in schools and in career counseling, school counselor role as transformative leaders, and the promotion of social justice in schools.  Through her involvement in community based participatory research as a school counselor, she helped with the development of We Can! Building Relationships and Resilience, a trauma-informed professional development for schools. Dr. Powers is passionate about the role of school counselors and the potential for transformative leadership through the ASCA model.
Her other interests include music (former music teacher), art (holds a certificate in Art Therapy), and gardening. She used all of these interests in her former role as school counselor.
