History and Mission

History and Mission

A Brief History

On Sept. 2, 1878, five Jesuits, two lay teachers and 120 students began classes at Creighton College, named for one of Omaha’s pioneering families.

Brothers Edward and John Creighton, hard working entrepreneurs who would become leading figures in the community, settled in Omaha in the mid-1850s. Sisters Mary Lucretia and Sarah Emily, who married the Creighton brothers, created a culture of faith and generosity throughout the area. Mary Lucretia provided in her will to establish Creighton College in Edward’s memory. John and Sarah Emily’s philanthropy enlarged it to a five-school university.

Today, Creighton University consists of nine schools and colleges with more than 8,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students and more than 2,250 employees. Creighton is one of 28 Jesuit colleges and universities in the United States.

Mission

Creighton is a Catholic and Jesuit comprehensive university committed to excellence in its selected undergraduate, graduate and professional programs.

As Catholic, Creighton is dedicated to the pursuit of truth in all its forms and is guided by the living tradition of the Catholic Church.

As Jesuit, Creighton participates in the tradition of the Society of Jesus, which provides an integrating vision of the world that arises out of a knowledge and love of Jesus Christ.

As comprehensive, Creighton’s education embraces several colleges and professional schools and is directed to the intellectual, social, spiritual, physical and recreational aspects of students’ lives and to the promotion of justice.

Creighton exists for students and learning. Members of the Creighton community are challenged to reflect on transcendent values, including their relationship with God, in an atmosphere of freedom of inquiry, belief and religious worship. Service to others, the importance of family life, the inalienable worth of each individual and appreciation of ethnic and cultural diversity are core values of Creighton.

Creighton faculty members conduct research to enhance teaching, to contribute to the betterment of society, and to discover new knowledge. Faculty and staff stimulate critical and creative thinking and provide ethical perspectives for dealing with an increasingly complex world.

Diversity and Inclusion

Diversity and Inclusion

As a Jesuit, Catholic university, Creighton is called to appreciate the unique talents, gifts, cultures, beliefs and backgrounds each of us brings to this campus.

In keeping with our Ignatian tradition of inclusivity and compassion, we seek a caring, hospitable environment for everyone, regardless of age, culture, faith, ethnicity, immigrant status, race, gender, sexual orientation, language, physical appearance, physical ability or social class.

We offer a welcoming, supportive environment to a diverse community of educators, professionals and support staff, and we support the personal, professional and spiritual growth of our employees through many development opportunities.
