A Message From the Chair
Welcome to the Department of Pathology at CHI Health and Creighton University School of Medicine!
CHI Health Creighton University Medical Center-Bergan Mercy, one of Omaha’s premier academic medical centers and one of the largest healthcare providers in Nebraska, offers a perfect environment for practice of pathology.
Our goal is to provide exceptional diagnostic services for our patients, advance the practice of pathology through education and facilitate a greater understanding of disease through research. Diverse and talented faculty offer clinical services in all major areas of pathology: surgical pathology, cytopathology, dermatopathology, hematopathology and autopsy pathology. We provide comprehensive, sub-specialty-based pathology services to the Bergan Mercy academic medical center and four other hospitals in the CHI Health Omaha metro area.
We have a highly competitive Anatomic and Clinical Pathology Residency Program. All faculty participate in the teaching and mentoring of our pathology residents. All faculty also teach medical students from the Creighton University School of Medicine at the Omaha campus throughout their four years. We also provide pathology education to the students in the newly-initiated Physician Assistant Program of the Creighton University School of Medicine. Through collaborative research our faculty provide an investigative environment for the training of residents and medical students. Main areas of investigative research are inflammation, cell biology and carcinogenesis.
Laboratory medicine is advancing, and practice of pathology is changing, both rapidly. In the past five years, we have focused on expanding expertise in the subspecialty areas, implementing tools for optimizing laboratory testing and physical space renovation. These changes have benefited our patients and enhanced our educational programs. Our residents achieve a national average of 90 percent first-time pass rate in the primary board certification in anatomic and clinical pathology.
