1890? Four panoptic tissue stereo views of La Fontaine’s fables. Collection E H, Paris. Unknown source.
Now here is a surprise find from years ago that I finally in 2025 have time to catalogue. From the front, these may seem to be unspectacular stereo photographs of La Fontaine’s fables, one for each of four fables. We may notice that the photograph is not on glass but on very fine tissue. Then if we check the obverse, it turns out to be hand-colored. It took a bit of work for me to find a light source bright enough to bring out the colors, and the pictures come alive! I would love to see the kind of apparatus apparently pictured on the cardboard frame of each stereoscope slide: two eyepieces looking down, perhaps into some light-source? I will offer a view for each slide of the experience of letting the color come through.
