1920? Framed Pair of Cards CP and “Keeper and Bear.” 7.25” x 5.8”. Unknown source.
These cards come from the series I have called “German English.” We have five in the series, including “The Trick Bear and the Keeper.” The situation here is different from, I believe, the traditional telling. There the bear and gardener befriend each other. Here one is a circus performer and the other is his trained animal. Apparently the trained animal liked his trainer but lacked an important part of his training! Heavy glass covering the pair inside a heavy wooden frame. The left card is oddly positioned up against the edge of the visible field. Perhaps the two cards got anchored before the framer finished the job.
