Wooden Wall Hangings

1950? "Lion with a Nail in His Paw.”  Bas-relief on wood.  5” x 7”.  Pioneer CA: Studio ‘88’.  From David Dellinger, Oakland, through Ebay, Feb., ‘18.

This is a curious piece, set for hanging on a wall.  Is the figure of the lion carved out of the wood or imposed on it?  Where one might expect a thorn in  the “Androcles and the Lion” story, here there is an actual nail inserted into the wood.  Good stories keep provoking creative representations!  Are those ridges in the wood natural or perhaps accented?  Is this a one-off handmade work?  And did Studio ‘88’ produce it or only sell it?
