1962? Suite of 46 black-and-white engravings of La Fontaine Fables by André Collot. Identical with those found in Collot’s “Jean de La Fontaine: Fables” by La Belle Édition. Plus duplicates of many engravings and a separate suite of 8 engravings, perhaps for an edition of Don Quixote. €67 from Librairie de l’Avenue, July, ’26.
This group of engravings is been a fascinating addition to the collection. First of all, there is the surprise that Librairie de l’Avenue guessed at a date of 1920. Bodemann estimates 1962 as the date for the book for which these engravings were obviously intended. The second surprise is the fact that these are black-and-white, while the book is colored – perhaps by hand? There is a distinct difference in viewing these two different sets – loose black-and-white and colored in a book. The comparison here of scans only suggests the difference. The set – along with the Don Quixote plates – raises the question: Who has a collection like this? My first answer is “The illustrator.” Might these have come from Collot’s effects? Who else would have had them. There are 4 singlets, 27 with duplicates, 10 with triplicates, and 5 with quadruplicates. I am delighted that our collection can preserve a little treasure like these!
