Denge Resimli La Fontaine Masallari

2002 The Cicada and The Ant.  Bariş Denge.  Pictures by Kemal Yörenç.  Paperbound.  Istanbul: Resimili La Fontaine Masallari 1: Denge Special Education.  $5 from thegreatcollectors through Ebay, June, '22.

This sixteen-page two-staple pamphlet (9¼" x 6¼") has simple drawings and error-laden prose to tell a standard version of GA.  The cover illustration of rejection tells the story well.

2002 The Chicken Laying Golden Eggs.  Bariş Denge.  Pictures by Kemal Yörenç.  Paperbound.  Istanbul: Resimili La Fontaine Masallari 2: Denge Special Education.  $5 from thegreatcollectors through Ebay, June, '22.

This sixteen-page two-staple pamphlet (9¼" x 6¼") has simple drawings and sometimes non-idiomatic prose with a few errors to tell a standard version of GGE.  The final  illustration of frustration summarizes the outcome of the story well.

2002 The Hunt of the Lion and the Donkey.  Bariş Denge.  Pictures by Kemal Yörenç.  Paperbound.  Istanbul: Resimili La Fontaine Masallari 3: Denge Special Education.  $5 from thegreatcollectors through Ebay, June, '22.

This sixteen-page two-staple pamphlet (9¼" x 6¼") has simple drawings and sometimes non-idiomatic prose with a few errors to tell a slightly different version of this fable about hunting together.  Two things make the telling different.  First, the animals terrified by the braying are here running to King Lion for help.  Run to a lion for help?  And here the donkey at fable's end is angry at the lion's making fun of him but he does not show it.  On 12, the lion is carrying back his dead prey, but they are all smiling!

2002 The Lion's Palace.  Bariş Denge.  Pictures by Kemal Yörenç.  Paperbound.  Istanbul: Resimili La Fontaine Masallari 4: Denge Special Education.  $5 from thegreatcollectors through Ebay, June, '22.

This sixteen-page two-staple pamphlet (9¼" x 6¼") has simple drawings and sometimes non-idiomatic prose with a few errors to tell a slightly elaborated version of the story of the bad odor in the lion's den.  The final image might be the best: the fox winks as he speaks of his "cold."

2002 The Donkey and the Dog.  Bariş Denge.  Pictures by Kemal Yörenç.  Paperbound.  Istanbul: Resimili La Fontaine Masallari 5: Denge Special Education.  $5 from thegreatcollectors through Ebay, June, '22.

This sixteen-page two-staple pamphlet (9¼" x 6¼") has simple drawings and sometimes non idiomatic prose to offer a traditional version of the story of the dog who does not help the donkey because the donkey had not helped the dog.  The editor has problems with print overlapping images here.  Surprisingly, when the wolf arrives, this dog tells the donkey to run.  Does he not more normally tell the donkey -- as the donkey had told him -- to wait for help until the owner awakes?  The last page is appropriately strong.  As the solitary wolf looks over bones, the story, which last had the wolf catching the fleeing donkey, says this "The Donkey comes to his senses but…"

2002 The Rooster and the Fox.  Bariş Denge.  Pictures by Kemal Yörenç.  Paperbound.  Istanbul: Resimili La Fontaine Masallari 6: Denge Special Education.  $5 from thegreatcollectors through Ebay, June, '22.

This sixteen-page two-staple pamphlet (9¼" x 6¼") has simple drawings and sometimes non-idiomatic prose with a few errors to tell a slightly elaborated version of the story of the tricker tricked over the claim of universal peace.  The cover picture, repeated from 6, portrays the fox's ploy well.

2002 Two Pigeons.  Bariş Denge.  Pictures by Kemal Yörenç.  Paperbound.  Istanbul: Resimili La Fontaine Masallari 7: Denge Special Education.  $5 from thegreatcollectors through Ebay, June, '22.

This sixteen-page two-staple pamphlet (9¼" x 6¼") has simple drawings and sometimes non-idiomatic prose with quite a few errors to tell a version of the story of a friend who goes off and then returns hurt.  In this version, it is a female pigeon that leaves behind her male friend.  She even knows that he is right, but "she wants to travel."  Perhaps the most telling image is of the traveler in the winter storm (11).

2002 Two Stubborn Goats.  Bariş Denge.  Pictures by Kemal Yörenç.  Paperbound.  Istanbul: Resimili La Fontaine Masallari 8:  Denge Special Education.  $5 from thegreatcollectors through Ebay, June, '22.

This sixteen-page two-staple pamphlet (9¼" x 6¼") has simple drawings and error-laden prose to tell a standard version of "Two Goats."  The only unusual element in this presentation may be that both goats die at the end.

2002 The Woman and the Milk Can.  Bariş Denge.  Pictures by Kemal Yörenç.  Paperbound.  Istanbul: Resimili La Fontaine Masallari 9: Denge Special Education.  $5 from thegreatcollectors through Ebay, June, '22.

This sixteen-page two-staple pamphlet (9¼" x 6¼") has simple drawings and error-laden prose to tell a standard version of MM.  An unusual element here is that the woman gets excited over the thought that the calf that would come from her cow plays with the sheep.  She breaks into dancing, and so loses the pot from her head.  Her husband beats her.  The final illustration depicts well the husband's frustration with his daydreaming wife.

2002 The Crow and the Fox.  Bariş Denge.  Pictures by Kemal Yörenç.  Paperbound.  Istanbul: Resimili La Fontaine Masallari 10: Denge Special Education.  $5 from thegreatcollectors through Ebay, June, '22.

This sixteen-page two-staple pamphlet (9¼" x 6¼") has simple drawings and error-laden prose to tell a standard version of FC.  Perhaps the best illustration is on 14: the smirking fox holds the cheese just released into his waiting paw.

2002 The Cat and the Old Mouse.  Bariş Denge.  Pictures by Kemal Yörenç.  Paperbound.  Istanbul: Resimili La Fontaine Masallari 11: Denge Special Education.  $5 from thegreatcollectors through Ebay, June, '22.

This sixteen-page two-staple pamphlet (9¼" x 6¼") has simple drawings and error-laden prose to tell a rather strange version of this story of a cat's cleverness.  First, this cat does not look much like a cat!  He uses a successful ploy: hanging himself from the ceiling.  The mice think him punished and dead.  "The cat jumped down and he ate some of the cats and injured some others."  Proofreader, wake up!  He ate mice, not cats!  This version goes on to offer as a second episode a variant of this fable, in which the cat covers himself with flour.  According to this version of the story, the trick does not work.

2002 The Deer Seeing Herself in the Water.  Bariş Denge.  Pictures by Kemal Yörenç.  Paperbound.  Istanbul: Resimili La Fontaine Masallari 12: Denge Special Education.  $5 from thegreatcollectors through Ebay, June, '22.

This sixteen-page two-staple pamphlet (9¼" x 6¼") has simple drawings and error-laden prose to tell a rather surprising version of this story of the deer admiring the deer's own horns.  This version makes the deer female.  It stands against most of the tradition when it has the deer escape the pursuing dog.  The most eloquent image shows a leaping deer on 14.

2002 The Mouse in the Country and the Mouse in the City.  Bariş Denge.  Pictures by Kemal Yörenç.  Paperbound.  Istanbul: Resimili La Fontaine Masallari 13: Denge Special Education.  $5 from thegreatcollectors through Ebay, June, '22.

This sixteen-page two-staple pamphlet (9¼" x 6¼") has simple drawings and sometimes non-idiomatic prose with a few errors to tell a standard version of TMCM following La Fontaine.  Both a man and a cat intrude on the mice's banquet.  The illustrations here seem more primitive than in the other members of this series of booklets.

2002 The Coward Rabbit.  Bariş Denge.  Pictures by Kemal Yörenç.  Paperbound.  Istanbul: Resimili La Fontaine Masallari 14: Denge Special Education.  $5 from thegreatcollectors through Ebay, June, '22.

This sixteen-page two-staple pamphlet (9¼" x 6¼") has simple drawings and sometimes non-idiomatic prose with a few errors to tell an unusual version of this fable.  In this story, the single rabbit central character is perennially phobic.  She will not leave home for fear.  She sleeps with her eyes open.  One day, she becomes so thirsty that she adventures out to the water.  There is no mention here of the usual motif of suicide.  In this version, she becomes afraid when the frogs splash into the water.  However, she overcomes her fear.  "Nothing can make me scared anymore."  Her scaring the frogs becomes a supplementary fact.  The best image may be the terrified rabbit on 5.

2002 The Wolf and the Dog.  Bariş Denge.  Pictures by Kemal Yörenç.  Paperbound.  Istanbul: Resimili La Fontaine Masallari 15: Denge Special Education.  $5 from thegreatcollectors through Ebay, June, '22.

This sixteen-page two-staple pamphlet (9¼" x 6¼") has simple drawings and sometimes non-idiomatic prose with frequent errors to tell a standard version of DW.  I am surprised that this wolf already is acquainted with collars.  Does that fact not weaken the surprise central to the fable?  I am also surprised that the visual artist never shows the neck of the dog to be chafed.

2002 The Wolf and the Fox [Cover: The Wolf and the Dog].  Bariş Denge.  Pictures by Kemal Yörenç.  Paperbound.  Istanbul: Resimili La Fontaine Masallari 16: Denge Special Education.  $5 from thegreatcollectors through Ebay, June, '22.

Oops!  This sixteen-page two-staple pamphlet (9¼" x 6¼") starts with a mistaken title on its cover.  Some copy editor was asleep.  Like others in the series, the booklet has simple drawings and sometimes non-idiomatic prose with frequent errors to tell a story which I believe I never heard before.  It concludes with a standard fable twist: a fox who has been acting like a wolf and is ready to eat a lamb hears a rooster and suddenly leaves his wolfskin behind to chase his usual prey.  The story goes through complicated steps to get the "fox in a wolfskin" that it needs for that ending.

2002 The Rabbit, the Weasel and the Cat.  Bariş Denge.  Pictures by Kemal Yörenç.  Paperbound.  Istanbul: Resimili La Fontaine Masallari 17: Denge Special Education.  $5 from thegreatcollectors through Ebay, June, '22.

This sixteen-page two-staple pamphlet (9¼" x 6¼") has simple drawings and error-laden prose to tell a slightly elaborated version of this story an argument over a household.  The telling of the story suffers over, I believe, careless substitution of "house" for "home."  The editing fails twice to keep print separate from picture, with resulting pages difficult to read.  The final illustration of the plump and sleepy cat tells the story well.  Beware of judges!

2002 The Rabbit and the Slug.  Bariş Denge.  Pictures by Kemal Yörenç.  Paperbound.  Istanbul: Resimili La Fontaine Masallari 18: Denge Special Education.  $5 from thegreatcollectors through Ebay, June, '22.

This sixteen-page two-staple pamphlet (9¼" x 6¼") has simple drawings and simple prose to tell a surprising version of TH.  The surprise here is the substitution of a slug for a tortoise.  The story is faithful to La Fontaine in having the hare sleep at the starting line.  The slug wears sunglasses throughout.

2002 The Saucepan and the Earthenware Pot.  Bariş Denge.  Pictures by Kemal Yörenç.  Paperbound.  Istanbul: Resimili La Fontaine Masallari 19: Denge Special Education.  $5 from thegreatcollectors through Ebay, June, '22.

This sixteen-page two-staple pamphlet (9¼" x 6¼") has simple drawings and error-laden prose to offer a local version of 2P.  The key line here may be the metal saucepan's reassurance "Nothing can harm you when you are with me."  Moral: "Everybody should find friends appropriate to themselves."

2002 The Fox and the Stork.  Bariş Denge.  Pictures by Kemal Yörenç.  Paperbound.  Istanbul: Resimili La Fontaine Masallari 20: Denge Special Education.  $5 from thegreatcollectors through Ebay, June, '22.

This sixteen-page two-staple pamphlet (9¼" x 6¼") has simple drawings and error-laden prose to offer a traditional version of FS.  Both characters are male.  Somewhat surprisingly, they are introduced as good neighbors trying to be good friends.  The stork's meal is served in bottles.  Moral: "You reap what you saw (sic)."
