La Fontaine's Cabinet

Each of the twelve books found in this lovely paper cabinet has its own colored picture for the oval on its cover, and from four to six fables with, apparently, five colored illustrations, within the booklet's 24 pages. Each also has a very nice small illustration on the back cover. The cabinet itself can be seen on this page: Book Related Toys. Each booklet measures just over 2" x 3". Each volume is numbered, and its title page serves as a T of C because it names the four or five fables in this volume. Paris: Presses de la Cité. $50 for the set from Dany Wolfs, Roesalare, Belgium, April, '01.

1956 Fables de La Fontaine I. La Fontaine. Cardboard-bound. Paris: Presses de la Cité. $3 from Dany Wolfs, Roesalare, Belgium, May, '01.

This little book shows FC in an oval on its blue cover. The cover illustration is especially lively. The fables presented are FC, WL, UP, TH, and "Le Coche et la Mouche."

1956 Fables de La Fontaine II. Cardboard-bound. Paris: Presses de la Cité. $3 from Dany Wolfs, Roesalare, Belgium, May, '01.

This little book shows MM in an oval on its salmon cover. The fables presented are MM, DW, "Le Laboureur et ses Enfants," and "Le Singe et le Chat." I have seldom seen an illustration of the latter depict so well the lying-down cat near the fire (21).

1956 Fables de La Fontaine III. Cardboard-bound. Paris: Presses de la Cité. $3 from Dany Wolfs, Roesalare, Belgium, May, '01.

This little book shows TMCM in an oval on its yellow cover. The fables presented are TMCM, "L'Alouette et ses Petits avec le Maitre d'un Champ," TT, and WC. There is a nice last black-and-white illustration of the crane flying away unrewarded.

1956 Fables de La Fontaine IV. Cardboard-bound. Paris: Presses de la Cité. $3 from Dany Wolfs, Roesalare, Belgium, May, '01.

This little book shows LM in an oval on its red cover. The fables presented are LM, AD, "Les Animaux Malades de la Peste," and TB. There is a fine illustration of AD including a rejoicing ant and some blood on the hunter's foot (9). There are also good illustrations of the sick lion and reluctant ass (16-17).

1956 Fables de La Fontaine V. Cardboard-bound. Paris: Presses de la Cité. $3 from Dany Wolfs, Roesalare, Belgium, May, '01.

This little book shows OF in an oval on its yellow cover. The fables presented are OF, OR, "Lane et le Chien," and "Le Cochet, le Chat et le Souriceau." The best illustration may be that for OR (9). The same little mouse who appeared on the back of Volume III is on the last page of this book.

1956 Fables de La Fontaine VI. Cardboard-bound. Paris: Presses de la Cité. $3 from Dany Wolfs, Roesalare, Belgium, May, '01.

This little book shows "Le Lion et le Moucheron" in an oval on its blue cover. The other fables presented are SS, "L'Oeil du Maitre," and "Les Médicins." In fact, the lion and his mosquito get two more illustrations, and the insect is much more visible on them than on the cover.

1956 Fables de La Fontaine VII. Cardboard-bound. Paris: Presses de la Cité. $3 from Dany Wolfs, Roesalare, Belgium, May, '01.

This little book shows FS in an oval on its green cover. The fables presented are 2P, FS, "L'Huitre et les Plaideurs," and "Les Deux Pigeons." Perhaps the best of the illustrations puts two very different faces on the two pots (5).

1956 Fables de La Fontaine VIII. Cardboard-bound. Paris: Presses de la Cité. $3 from Dany Wolfs, Roesalare, Belgium, May, '01.

This little book shows MSA in an oval on its gold cover. The fables presented are GA, MSA, FG, and "Le Chat, la Belette et le Petit Lapin." The ass in the illustration on 9 seems quite pleased to be carried! Raminagrobis the cat does a very good job of feigning inability to hear the hare and the weasel (21).

1956 Fables de La Fontaine IX. Cardboard-Bound. Paris: Presses de la Cité. $3 from Dany Wolfs, Roesalare, Belgium, May, '01.

This little book shows "Le Lièvre et les Grenouilles" in an oval on its red cover. The other fables presented are "Le Petit Poisson et le Pécheur," "Le Renard et le Bouc," and "Le Loup devenu Berger." This book attempts a two-page spread for illustrating the title-fable (16-17).

1956 Fables de La Fontaine X. Cardboard-bound. Paris: Presses de la Cité. $3 from Dany Wolfs, Roesalare, Belgium, May, '01.

This little book shows "Le Cerf Se Voyant dans l'Eau" in an oval on its green cover. The other fables presented are "Le Heron," "Le Loup, la Chèvre et le Chevreau," "Le Corbeau Voulant Imiter l'Aigle," and DS. This book offers a nice two-page spread for illustrating "Le Corbeau Voulant Imiter l'Aigle."

1956 Fables de La Fontaine XI. Cardboard-bound. Paris: Presses de la Cité. $3 from Dany Wolfs, Roesalare, Belgium, May, '01.

This little book shows "Le Savetier et le Financier" in an oval on its red cover. The other fables presented are BF, "Le Chameau et les Batons Flottants," GGE, "Le Lion Devenu Vieux," and "L'Ane et le Petit Chien." Perhaps the best illustration in the book is the first (5). In it the shoemaker sings full-throatedly. This booklet is the only one to include six stories.

1956 Fables de La Fontaine XII. Cardboard-bound. Paris: Presses de la Cité. $3 from Dany Wolfs, Roesalare, Belgium, May, '01.

This little book shows La Fontaine himself in an oval on its blue-gray cover. This "album" contains no fables. It has instead a dictionary of all the words in bold print in the first eleven albums, and then it has a full T of C featuring the names of the fables in each volume. On 16-17 there is a very pretty two-page spread showing the fox and wolf reading books under a tree, while other animals look on.
