McGuffey's Eclectic Reader

1879 McGuffey's Third Eclectic Reader. Revised Edition. Hardbound. Eclectic Educational Series. NY: American Book Company. $3 from Idle Time Books, Washington, DC, Jan., '99.

This book is identical with one I already have listed under 1879/1920, except that it lacks the further dates under the preface on the reverse of the title-page. Thus, if it is not from 1879, it is at least from before 1896, the next copyright date listed there. Its poor condition suggests that it is very old! As I mention there, it contains five fables, several with rhyming morals and illustrations of historic interest. In BW (42), "John" loses his pet lamb along with other sheep. SW (59) is well told. The others are "The Clock and the Sundial" (72), "The Bats" (95), and "The Seven Sticks" (115). Apparently this is the one of McGuffey's rare readers with a significant component of fables. Lindberg in 1976 mentions that the competition readers used fables more extensively.

1879/1920 McGuffey's Third Eclectic Reader. Revised Edition. Eclectic Educational Series. No illustrator acknowledged. NY: American Book Company. $4.50 at The Antiquarium, Oct., '90.
