Surgical Clerkships

Introduction

All medical students will spend assigned weeks on surgery under the supervision of an attending physician. During this experience, the student will be an integral part of the surgeon’s team.

Each rotation will have specific goals and objectives. At the closure of the rotation, students will be able to demonstrate:

  • Performs and presents an appropriate surgical history, physical exam, differential diagnosis and treatment plan for each patient while demonstrating effective clinical reasoning.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, differential diagnosis, diagnostic and laboratory tests and their interpretation and treatment plan of each surgical topic presented in the Core Curriculum.
  • Demonstrates self-directed learning skills utilizing medical resources in the care of patients.
  • Communicates effectively with all members of the healthcare team and surgical patients.
  • Demonstrates honesty and integrity in performance of all student responsibilities.
  • Demonstrates awareness of comprehensive surgical care utilizing the team approach.

Blue Service - Trauma, Endocrine, General and Pediatric Surgery

On this rotation, medical students will be exposed to trauma resuscitation in the emergency room, operative management, and non-operative management of the trauma patient. Our team emphasizes a multi-disciplinary approach for trauma patient care. Attending staff members, who supervise this service, provide trauma and general surgical expertise to the team.

Colorectal Surgery

A private practice group of physicians supervise this service, providing expertise and clinical experience in colorectal surgery while allowing medical students to maximize their experience by using multiple facilities.

This rotation is located at CHI Health Lakeside Medical Center in Omaha. It reflects the clinical experience of general surgery in a private practice setting. Students participate in the care of patients who are admitted under the care of the following physician:

Mercy - General Surgery

The rotation is located at CHI Health Mercy Medical Center in Iowa. It reflects the clinical experience and general surgery in a private practice setting. In addition, students participate in the care of patients who are admitted under the care of the following physicians:

Green Service – General Surgery

Bergan Mercy (General Surgery) 

This rotation, located at CHI Health Creighton University Medical Center Bergan Mercy and Lakeside Hospital, reflects the clinical experience and general surgery in a private hospital setting. In addition, students participate in the care of patients who are admitted under the care of the following physicians:

Neurosurgery

Medical students will learn about the management of traumatic head injury and also become familiar with spinal and intracranial (non-traumatic) diseases. The faculty member on this service is:

Nebraska Spine

This private practice group of surgeons specializes in spinal surgery.

Orange Service - Bariatric, Colorectal, Oncology

Patient care management is provided on this very busy service by general surgery residents and fellows in bariatric and colorectal surgery. Attending staff members, who supervise this service, provide expertise and clinical experience in bariatric, colorectal and oncologic surgery to the team on this rotation.

Orthopedic Surgery

Medical students learn the fundamentals of orthopedic surgery and become familiar with case presentations. Student may travel between CHI Health facilities in the Omaha area to maximize their orthopedic exposure.

Plastic Surgery

Medical students learn the fundamentals of plastic surgery and become familiar with common plastic case presentations.

Red Service - General, Thoracic, Laparoscopic and Esophageal Surgery

Located at the CHI CUMC Bergan Mercy campus, under the guidance of senior surgical residents and attending staff members, medical students learn basic surgical techniques in general, laparoscopic, surgical oncology, thoracic and esophageal surgery.

Yellow - General Surgery

Located at Immanuel Hospital in Omaha, medical students learn basic surgical techniques in general, laparoscopic, surgical oncology, thoracic and esophageal surgery under the guidance of senior surgical residents and attending staff members.
