Gastroenterology Fellowship Program

Clinical Training

Clinical training takes place within CHI Health, an academic health system which includes five urban hospitals and over 70 clinics in the Omaha area. Fellows are primarily at Creighton University Medical Center and rotate to one large community hospital (Immanuel Hospital) with some outpatient clinic and endoscopy at an additional community Hospital, Lakeside. We are the referral center for the larger health system (15 hospitals and more than 150 physician practice groups across Nebraska and eastern Iowa).

In addition to clinical breadth, fellows have world-class support in clinical and translational sciences, genetics and GI malignancies. Current fellows have investigated topics related to esophageal and motility issues, gastric cancer in Lynch Syndrome, hepatitis C eradication, and various other clinical and quality improvement projects.

About our Faculty

GI faculty are recruited based on their desire to teach and their expertise within a specialized area of gastroenterology, including motility, inflammatory bowel disease, liver disease, pancreatic disease, absorption, and hereditary GI cancers.  They share their teaching and clinical expertise with exceptional faculty in GI surgery, GI radiology, and GI pathology through formal didactic presentations, regional conferences, as well as clinical and research collaborations.

Mission Statement

The Division of Gastroenterology will support the Creighton University mission by increasing Creighton’s effect on the education and provision of healthcare at the local and national levels. We will continue to train top fellows and residents who share our intellectual, social, and spiritual values. We will continue to provide excellent medical care to patients, within an environment of intellectual rigor to foster delivery of the best practices to the individual and the community as a whole.

Program Aims

  • To prepare our fellows to become highly competent, collegial subspecialty consultants with the ability to excel in a variety of medical environments including both community and academic practice. They will demonstrate this through a strong knowledge base, technical and clinical competence, and work in interdisciplinary teams. As such all fellows will exceed general endoscopy procedural requirements by 20% and score greater than 50 percentile on the in-training exam.
  • To cultivate physicians who exemplify Jesuit values including emphasis on social consciousness, leadership, and development of the whole person. Fellows will grow through advocating for all patients including those from diverse backgrounds and under and uninsured patients, with a goal of making sustained improvements in care through quality improvement and patient safety projects including projects that address healthcare disparity.
  • To develop effective teachers who further knowledge of other learners and physicians through teaching experience at medical school, resident, and community physician levels.
  • To develop effective teachers who further knowledge of other learners and physicians through teaching experience at medical school, resident, and community physician levels.
  • To foster an environment of lifelong learning and scholarship through participation in scholarly activities, national meeting participation, and the critique and incorporation of new evidence based medicine into clinical practice. All fellows will attend and present at least one scholarly project at a national meeting prior to completion.
