Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals

Am I Eligible?

Applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 24 at the start of the program and US citizens or permanent residents. German language proficiency is not required but is strongly recommended. Applicants must have a minimum of a high school diploma; college students or recent graduates are also welcome to apply; candidates must have at least three-months career work related experience.  The program is primarily designed for business, technical, vocational, and agricultural fields. Possessing a double major in one of these fields with a more academic field such as international relations, political science or German studies is acceptable.

What Will I Receive?

This scholarship program consists of two (2) months of language school; four (4) months of classes in your career field at a technical or professional school or university; and a five (5) month internship in your career field.  The internship may be compensated. It is primarily designed for business, technical, vocational, and agricultural fields. Participants must pay for most of their transportation to the orientation seminar in Washington, DC and for all of their transportation from the evaluation seminar in New York City. Participants also need to bring spending money for the year -- we suggest $300-$350 per month ($3,600-$4,200 for the year). This money covers personal items, entertainment, and some food. It does not include large purchases or travel. It is possible that the participant will be required to use some of this personal money to cover basic living expenses during the internship phase, in the case that the salary does not cover them.

Additional Information

One of the goals of the scholarship is to expand the body of leaders in German-American relations. The German Chancellor Scholarship Program is directed at young men and women from a wide range of fields who might not otherwise come to know Germany. Applicants who apply from Germany and/or who recently have been in Germany for a considerable amount of time are less likely to be awarded the scholarship. That also holds true for applicants who presently hold another (German) scholarship that sponsors their stay in Germany. In contrast, it is no disadvantage to have spent time in Germany in the past. German Chancellor Scholarships have been awarded to applicants who completed their undergraduate studies just prior to the program. However, candidates should possess a level of career certainty and professional ambition that is often more refined in candidates with greater professional or academic experience.
