Professor Irina V. Fox is a scholar of business law whose
research focuses on bankruptcy, corporate governance, and the intersection of
financial markets and legal institutions. Her work examines how legal rules
shape the functioning of capital markets, particularly in areas such as
fraudulent transfers, corporate reorganizations, and securities-related
transactions.
Her scholarship has appeared in leading journals including
the American Bankruptcy Law Journal, the Delaware Journal of
Corporate Law, and the Norton Journal of Bankruptcy Law and Practice.
Courts have cited her work in several decisions, including opinions from the
Louisiana Supreme Court and federal bankruptcy courts in the Southern District
of New York, the Northern District of Illinois, and other jurisdictions. Her
recent scholarship continues to explore emerging issues at the intersection of
bankruptcy, financial markets, and technology, including digital assets and
AI-driven investment advice.
Professor Fox serves as Associate Dean for Research and
Innovation at Creighton University School of Law, where she teaches courses in
Business Associations, Mergers and Acquisitions, Securities Regulation,
Bankruptcy, Debtor-Creditor Law, Corporate Reorganization, and Corporate
Finance. Known for an engaging and practical teaching style, she frequently
connects classroom discussions to real-world developments in financial markets
and corporate practice. She particularly enjoys mentoring students and helping
them see how legal doctrine operates in the complex realities of business
decision-making.
Before entering academia, Professor Fox practiced law in San
Francisco at Latham & Watkins LLP, an AmLaw A-List firm, where she
represented multinational corporations in complex business litigation with a
focus on antitrust matters. She worked on several high-profile mergers,
participated in a Silicon Valley technology trial, advised emerging companies
in finance transactions, and handled cutting-edge bankruptcy issues. Her
practice also included significant pro bono work, including immigration,
veterans’ benefits, and criminal innocence petitions.
Professor Fox previously served as a law clerk to the
Honorable Carl J. Barbier of the United States District Court for the Eastern
District of Louisiana, where she worked on a wide range of federal civil and
criminal matters, including proceedings related to the Deepwater Horizon oil
spill litigation.
Her path to the legal profession began far from the
courtroom. Born and raised in Russia, Professor Fox immigrated to the United
States in her early twenties and later became a U.S. citizen while serving in
the United States Air Force as a clinical laboratory technician. After
completing a master’s degree in international relations, she attended Louisiana
State University’s Paul M. Hebert Law Center, where she graduated summa cum
laude, ranked second in her class, and was inducted into the Order of the
Coif.
Professor Fox’s international background continues to shape
her perspective as a scholar and teacher. Fluent in Russian and English and
conversant in several other languages, she brings a comparative and global
perspective to the study of business law and financial regulation.
Outside the classroom, she regularly speaks at professional
conferences and continuing legal education programs on topics including
bankruptcy law, securities regulation, and digital assets. She also enjoys
studying history, traveling, and exploring the intersection of law, economics,
and global finance.
