Description
The 2023 Primary Care Update is designed to update attendees regarding the evidence supporting best current clinical practices in ambulatory care. The information presented is intended to enhance clinical competence in the diagnosis and treatment of select primary care topics as identified by past participants.

Objectives
Pre-conference: Thursday, May 18, 2023
- Discover indications and contraindications of endometrial biopsy
- Complete endometrial biopsy procedure didactic and hands on
- Review after procedure care and result
- Review anatomy of the knee with US
- Review anatomy of the shoulder with US
- Identify and compare normal to abnormal anatomy
Day 1: Friday, May 19, 2023
- Review the purpose of cognitive screening in the primary care clinic and its limitations
- Define the diagnostic criteria for delirium, mild cognitive impairment and dementia
- Recognize the principles of managing MCI and dementia in the outpatient setting
- Review HIV prevention intervention
- Identify Prep candidates
- Test for HIV and have a mastery in initial treatment or referral
- Recall the clinical presentation of Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, and other common movement disorders
- Describe newer approaches to diagnosis and treatment of common movement disorders
- Recognize and prevent common pitfalls in the pharmacotherapy of movement disorders
- Explain the different stages of the transition to menopause
- Discuss hormonal and nonhormonal management of vasomotor symptoms (VMS)
- Summarize management options for the genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM)
- Describe the differences between the pediatric and adult skeletons
- Identify adolescent specific musculoskeletal injuries
- Discuss treatment strategies for adolescent musculoskeletal injuries
Day 2: Saturday, May 20, 2023
- Explain causes of cirrhosis and pathophysiology of portal hypertension
- Review prognostic tools in cirrhosis
- Describe management of complications of cirrhosis
- Review the response of the primary care system in previous public health emergencies--immediate, intermediate, and long-term
- Discuss the management of COVID-19 infection by primary care providers: prevention, acute illness, intermediate complications, and "long-haul" COVID.
- Identify the advocacy role of primary care in partnership with public health colleagues.
- Review obstructive sleep apnea and who is at risk
- Identify what is involved in doing and interpreting a sleep study
- Review treatment options for obstructive sleep apnea
- Differentiate between normal anxiety and specific anxiety disorders
- Define DSM-5 diagnostic criteria of different types of anxiety disorders
- Define DSM-5 diagnostic criteria of different types of anxiety disorders
- Review management and treatment options for anxiety disorders in the primary care setting
- Identify resources for developing a prognostic estimate
- Appreciate the impact of shared prognostic awareness on goals conversations and treatment decisions
- Articulate prognostic factors relevant to the normal dying process
- Determine whether a patient is a fall risk
- Review the signs to look for in assessing need for re-conditioning a patient
- Identify measures to take to reduce fall risk and begin re-conditioning patients
- Evaluate when it is appropriate to seek consultation with Occupational Therapy and/or Physical Therapy to reduce fall risk and deconditioning

Refund Policy
Continuing education and professional development courses may be cancelled by the attendee in writing up to 7 days before the course begins for a full refund, less a $25 processing fee. No refund will be given 7 days prior to the course. Some courses are not eligible for a refund; these exceptions are noted in specific course descriptions. If a course is cancelled by the University for non-weather related issues, the student will be notified and a full refund will be processed. In the event of a weather related closure, the course will be rescheduled.
