Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN)

Creighton University College of Nursing offers one of the most successful and longest-running accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) programs in the nation. We’ve been providing quality accelerated nursing education for 50 years—with high NCLEX pass rates consistently exceeding the national average. The program is fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). It recognizes and builds on students’ previous education and experiences, allowing those with at least a bachelor’s degree in another discipline to earn a BSN degree in just one year.

Available at both our Omaha and Phoenix campuses.

When you choose Creighton, you can expect:

  • An accelerated 12-month curriculum designed for second-degree students
  • Personalized support from expert faculty
  • A proven track record of preparing practice-ready nurses

How the ABSN Prepares You for a Career in Nursing

Creighton's ABSN program is just 12 months. It consists of five eight-week terms, one two-week term and one three-week term. During the 58-credit-hour program, you’ll learn to integrate respect for each person’s dignity, worth and spiritual uniqueness, while also being able to demonstrate professional accountability to safe practice and quality client outcomes.

Additional skills you’ll develop include:

  • Critical thinking
  • Clinical and ethical decision-making
  • Professional communication skills
  • Strong theoretical knowledge and clinical skills
  • Effective collaboration as a leader

The program is available in Omaha and Phoenix, and students can choose a fall or spring start on either campus.

Please note that students requiring an F-1 visa may only join a January cohort, due to visa regulations.

  2. Describe how your values align with the mission of Creighton University. (approximately 200 words)

To be considered for the program, applicants must meet the following requirements and prerequisites.

  • A bachelor’s degree or higher in another discipline from an accredited college or university prior to the start date for the program. (You can apply while your Bachelor’s Degree is in prograss, but it should be completed and on official transcripts 45 days in advance. If you are admitted, you will need to provide an official transcript showing your degree earned and date conferred prior to the first day of class.)
  • A cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale
  • Completion of the following prerequisite courses with a C (2.0) or higher prior to the start date of the program:
    • 3 semester hours (or 4.5 quarter hours) each of general sociology, general psychology, developmental psychology (must cover the lifespan), ethics and statistics
    • 2-3 semester hours (or 3-4.5 quarter hours) of human nutrition

  • General chemistry
  • Human anatomy (A&P I)
  • Human physiology (A&P II)

Also note that introductory chemistry, survey of chemistry or a combined general, organic and biochemistry course will NOT meet the general chemistry requirement. Human anatomy, human physiology, general chemistry, and microbiology must have been completed in the last 10 years. There is a potential to override this rule depending on the grade you initially received, when you took it, and how you have used the knowledge from these courses since you took them. To petition this requirement, please reach out to our admissions advisors at nursing@creighton.edu.

Prerequisites can be taken through any accredited institution and must meet our semester hour requirements. Courses can be taken online or in person. If you have questions about specific courses we can accept, please email nursing@creighton.edu.

An Optional Practical Training (OPT) disclaimer:

OPT permits international students to receive full-time employment in their field of study upon completion of a degree program. If eligible, United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) can grant F1 visa holders up to 12 months of OPT for each higher degree level they obtain. If students entering Creighton’s ABSN program have already utilized their bachelor’s level 12-month OPT opportunity, they will not be eligible for another OPT opportunity after completion of the ABSN program—even if it’s in an entirely different field of study. International students should consider this when making plans during their 60-day grace periods after degree completions. For questions, please contact our Global Engagement office.

Please note that international students may only apply to spring terms.
