Community Engagement Updates
The community engagement team at Creighton & Community at the Highlander spent the spring and early summer participating in and hosting a variety of activities to promote health and well-being in and around Omaha.
Team members helped organize and participated in the Black Family Health and Wellness Association Health Fair in March, engaging with approximately 200 attendees. Creighton student volunteers also participated. The team also participated in the Omaha Housing Authority Community Resource Fair in March, for residents of Malcolm’s Place, part of the Highlander community focused on senior citizens.
In April, Creighton & Community hosted several community events focused on connection, learning and collaboration. To celebrate National Poetry Month, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Kingfisher Institute and the Department of English hosted a neighborhood pizza party at the Highlander. Creighton & Community also hosted ArtsPlay of Omaha Wolf Trap, in partnership with Omaha Performing Arts, inviting caregivers and children ages 3-6 to engage in music, movement and drama. The team also hosted a Community Poverty Simulation Event in partnership with Omaha Bridges and fellow Highlander Accelerator occupants Big Mama’s Kitchen, Metropolitan Community College, No More Empty Pots and others. This event was held in conjunction with Share Omaha’s Do Good Days.
In June, the community engagement team participated in community baby showers, the Omaha Freedom Festival in honor of Juneteenth, the World Refugee Health Fair, the Frank T. Peak Memorial Health Fair, a UNO Kinesiology Water Safety Event, the Omaha Bridges Out of Poverty Reunion Resource Fair, a safety fair for employees of National Indemnity Insurance Company, and the 75 North Highlander Wellness Fair.
Creighton & Community also hosted a free World Speaks class series in June and July. In the class, participants practiced language skills and engaged directly with native speakers, supporting cultural exchange and community connection.
