Collaboration among healthcare professionals is key to delivering better care and improving the patient experience. As one of the first centers of its kind in the nation, the Center for Interprofessional Practice, Education and Research (CIPER) serves as the catalyst for interprofessional education and practice for Creighton University and CHI Health, our primary academic health partner.
CIPER is a learning laboratory where students, clinicians and faculty learn, practice and advance interprofessional collaboration through education, hands-on experience, research and shared resources.
CIPER supports Creighton students from across our health sciences programs. Through carefully structured educational experiences, Creighton students learn to develop the communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills essential to delivering high-quality collaborative care.
Health sciences students begin by taking IPE 500: Introduction to Collaborative Care. This course introduces them to what it means to work as part of a healthcare team. Students build a foundation in communication, teamwork and shared decision-making, skills that are essential in today’s healthcare environment.
The competencies built here prepare students for the next step—the IPE Passport (IPE 001).
CIPER’s IPE Passport provides a structured, hands-on approach to interprofessional learning. Through a series of activities, students engage with peers from different disciplines, applying core competencies for collaborative practice in real-world and simulated settings. This intentional, team-based training helps graduates enter the workforce ready to contribute effectively in complex healthcare environments.
Creighton’s interprofessional education extends beyond our campus, too. Through the College of Professional and Continuing Education, we offer faculty-developed IPE courses designed for working professionals, educators, non-Creighton students and lifelong learners.
These online, self-paced courses introduce the foundations of interprofessional collaboration and help participants strengthen communication, teamwork and patient-centered care skills no matter their role in healthcare.
CIPER also contributes to the broader field of interprofessional education by developing and sharing tools used by educators, clinicians and healthcare teams.

CIPER leadership, faculty and students are advancing new knowledge in interprofessional research. Many projects bring together collaborators from across Creighton’s health sciences programs, reflecting the team-based approach students will carry into their careers.
Through active participation in leading organizations, including National Academies of Practice, All Together Better Health, Interprofessional Education Collaborative and American Interprofessional Health Collaborative, CIPER helps shape the future of interprofessional education and collaborative practice at both national and global levels.
This work also creates meaningful opportunities for students. By engaging in interdisciplinary research, Creighton health sciences students build skills in collaboration, communication and critical thinking, preparing them to transition confidently into professional practice and contribute to better patient outcomes.
The Creighton Journal of Collaborative Practice and Education is an interprofessional, interdisciplinary journal devoted to advancement of collaborative healthcare practice and education. CJCPE welcomes submissions that improve the knowledge and understanding of how collaborative practice contributes to improvement of healthcare delivery, quality of care, access to care, intersections with the humanities and improving the healthcare experience for individuals, families, communities and practitioners.
Articles for submission should demonstrate innovations or improvements in this field that meaningfully contribute to the advancement of curricular teaching or practice, assessment and evaluation, collaborative care models, and/or an understanding of team dynamics as it relates to healthcare delivery and outcomes.
