You may know that Creighton women’s volleyball had an historic season in 2024, culminating in an appearance in the elite eight and a 5-set loss to eventual national champion Penn State. You may not have known that throughout the season, the volleyball program had teamed up with the IPH to raise awareness about population health and to make a difference in the community in addressing factors that lead to disparities in health.
The Heider Foundation generously provided funding to support a season-long program where during every home game, each Creighton “ace” serve earned a cash donation, culminating in a $6,000 donation to a local community-based organization working to address health-related social needs. Additionally, Creighton fans turned out big to support a food drive for the Food Bank for the Heartland in November, resulting in the donation of 700 pounds of food just in time for the holidays.
Building on the success of the volleyball effort, the women’s basketball team has made a commitment to helping to address food insecurity in the metro area. Based once again on the generosity of the Heider family, an end-of-season donation to a community non-profit that works to address food insecurity will be made, based on the home game total 3-pointers the team makes. Additionally, the volleyball and basketball teams plan to spend some off-season time volunteering in the community, working to eliminate food insecurity in Omaha.
