At Creighton we offer multiple postgraduate pharmacy training programs with residency and fellowship positions yearly, including opportunities at CHI Health Creighton University Medical Center University Campus, CHI Health Creighton University Bergan Mercy and the Center for Drug Information & Evidence-Based Practice at Creighton University. We also offer an accredited community pharmacy residency program affiliated with our outpatient pharmacy.

The residency program at Creighton University Medical Center - Bergan Mercy is designed to develop a practitioner’s expertise in the provision of pharmaceutical care that centers on development of knowledge and skills needed to become a competent and confident practitioner. The resident will be accountable for optimizing drug therapy and achieving the most favorable outcomes as a member of the medical care team. The resident will provide drug information and education to patients, other healthcare professionals and students. The resident will become proficient in developing a means of becoming a lifelong learner, monitoring his or her own skills, and embracing a commitment to the profession. The residency is flexible and provides the resident with a wide range of experiences.
Purpose Statement
PGY1 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training. This program will center on developing a core skill set in medication therapy management, teaching, team functioning, communication, clinical research, literature evaluation, time management, presentation development and delivery, and direct patient interaction in an academic medical center setting. This program offers the resident the opportunity and stimulus to develop, to the highest degree obtainable, his/her professional expertise as a practitioner. Graduates of this program will be highly qualified to practice as pharmacist clinicians in patient care positions, adjunct faculty positions, or for PGY2 training in their area of choice.
Practice Site
A tertiary care facility and major teaching hospital located in Omaha, Nebraska, Creighton University Medical Center - Bergan Mercy is a level I trauma, academic medical center with a teaching and research affiliation with Creighton University. The hospital’s pharmacy department has decentralized clinical pharmacists whose functions include, but are not limited to: pharmacokinetic monitoring and dosing, multi-disciplinary care team rounding, antimicrobial stewardship, anticoagulation monitoring and management, IV to PO conversions, drug information and overall pharmacotherapy monitoring and dosing. In addition, satellite pharmacies in the operating room and infusion center are open Monday through Friday.

Experiences
Participants work directly with faculty within the Schools of Pharmacy and Medicine and hospital pharmacy staff to develop advanced practice skills in the areas of patient care and pharmacotherapy.
Participants have the opportunity to complete teaching certification programs in building a teaching portfolio, advanced critical care and clinical pharmacocybernetics. Participants have multiple opportunities to gain teaching experience through the Creighton University School of Pharmacy and Health Professions. In addition, participants will gain experience precepting fourth year pharmacy students on rotation.
Participants are given ample time during the year to work on research projects of their own design that will be presented at the Midwest Pharmacy Residents Conference. In addition, participants will gain exposure to other types of research being conducted both in the School of Pharmacy or CHI Health Creighton University Medical Center.
Participants will also gain experience in public speaking through the presentation of continuing education programs (two CE-approved pharmacy grand rounds presentations).

Immanuel Medical Center is a full-service hospital, Cancer Center, Rehabilitation Center and Specialty Spine Hospital. Immanuel Medical Center also offers psychiatric services and serves as a hospitality house for out-of-town families. Immanuel Medical Center has a teaching and research affiliation with Creighton University School of Pharmacy and Health Professions and has decentralized clinical pharmacists available to all care units.

The purpose of the Postgraduate Year One (PGY1) Pharmacy Practice Training Program is to provide organized and directed pharmacy training in a community hospital setting. The program develops the knowledge and skills of the resident in various areas including:

Structure
The Immanuel Medical Center residency program consists of 12 months, to include a minimum of 2,000 hours of contact time, extended over 50 weeks. The structure of the program is organized to provide the achievement of residency goals in the areas of acute patient care and pharmacotherapy.

- Provision of drug information related to patient care and prospective therapeutic drug monitoring to ensure provision of safe, efficacious and cost-effective pharmacotherapy to patients.
- Decentralized clinical pharmacy services in medical surgical service, adult ICU, hematology/oncology, psychiatry and during multidisciplinary care team rounds.
- Staffing as a clinical pharmacist in the inpatient pharmacy.
- Teaching opportunities are available with didactic lectures, grand rounds presentations and precepting PharmD students on clinical rotations.

Qualifications
- The candidate must possess a Doctor of Pharmacy degree awarded from an ACPE-accredited college of pharmacy.
- The candidate must be eligible for licensure as a pharmacist in Nebraska.
- Membership in the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists is required.

Gain experience and confidence in the development, implementation and delivery of community-based patient care services for multiple populations through direct patient care activities, interdisciplinary collaboration and management activities designed to foster the economic viability of patient care services.
The program seeks to engage participants in a variety of activities that facilitate leadership, enhance the clinical knowledge necessary to care for patients in a community setting and assess competency in the aspects of practice management that involve deciding upon, planning for, marketing and implementing a new patient care service. Participants will develop teaching skills used for educating patients, students, pharmacists and other health care providers as the basis for assuming a significant role in a community pharmacy and/or academia.
Program Details
The Creighton University Campus Pharmacy and Creighton University School of Pharmacy & Health Professions (CU SPAHP) offers two post-graduate year-one community practice residency positions.
Program Outcomes and Goals
The Community Practice Residency is a 12-month program designed to develop clinicians that practice independently and excel in designing advanced patient care services in a community setting. The partnership between Creighton University and the Creighton University Campus Pharmacy provides participants with a well-rounded educational experience in a variety of settings, which focus on the core areas of practice specified in the ASHP/APhA Accreditation Standards, including patient care and practice management.
Upon completion, participants will be competent and confident practitioners as evidenced by their ability to:
- Provide direct patient care to multiple populations within the community setting
- Educate patients, students, pharmacists and other health care professionals
- Develop collaborative practices with other health care providers
- Exercise leadership skills in the areas of education, teaching and research
- Provide clear and concise verbal and written information to health care providers, patients and the community
- Develop investigative and problem-solving skills through the design, implementation, and completion of a research project with a manuscript suitable for publication
- Manage a pharmacy with a focus on providing economically sustainable patient care services
Primary Residency Location
Creighton University Campus Pharmacy is currently located at 2412 Cuming St. Suite 201, on the 2nd level of the CHI Health Creighton University Medical Center University Campus in Omaha, Nebraska.
Creighton University Campus Pharmacy is a community pharmacy that provides outpatient services to patients in the community, discharge patients, ambulatory clinic patients and university employees. The pharmacy is owned and operated by Creighton University and is an active teaching site for community residents, clerkship students and student employees.

In addition to the learning opportunities above, participants will create a customized learning plan to guide their learning throughout the year. Strong consideration will be given to areas of interest for each participant in terms of providing educational experiences.
Participants will be required to prepare and submit a paper for publication and present a research project at the Midwest Pharmacy Residency Conference.
Candidate Qualifications
- Candidates should be graduates of an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE)-accredited Doctor of Pharmacy degree program.
- Applicants must be licensed or eligible for licensure in the state or jurisdiction in which the residency program is conducted.
- Individuals making application to residency programs that have applied for accreditation or that are accredited by ASHP must participate in and adhere to the rules of the Resident Matching Program (RMP) process as set forth in Rules for the ASHP Pharmacy Resident Matching Program.

The Center for Drug Information & Evidence-Based Practice at Creighton University offers a dynamic 1-year residency program (PGY1 or PGY2) in drug information with an emphasis in evidence-based practice. The program offers an intensive, rewarding experience in drug information practice that will develop skills and expertise that is suitable for a career path in a variety of settings. While providing an intensive experience in drug information practice, the residency is flexible enough to allow pursuit of individual interest areas. Residents are encouraged to explore areas of interest and gain exposure to a variety of practice settings.

Accreditation
This residency is not accredited by an accrediting body. This is by choice of the program directors. The residency generally follows the definitions and guidelines set forth by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) and would likely be accredited if accreditation was sought. However, at present time, the program directors have opted not to pursue accreditation.

Resident Qualifications
The resident should hold a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited U.S. pharmacy program before the start of the residency and be eligible for licensure in Nebraska. Previous pharmacy work experience or a residency in pharmacy practice is preferred, but not required. Demonstrated ability to communicate proficiently in writing and verbally is preferred.
Residency Experiences
The Drug Information Residency programs does not have blocked “rotations,” but does have a variety of experiences than occur throughout the 12 month period of the program.
1. Drug Information Consultation Service. The resident will become a competent practitioner in the area of drug information clinical practice by participating in the day-to-day operations and management of the drug information consultation service. This is a core competency that is emphasized throughout the duration of the program. The resident will provide evidence-based drug information consultations to health care professionals, working independently or collaboratively with Doctor of Pharmacy rotation students. This experience requires the resident to become proficient in evaluating and synthesizing large bodies of medical literature, complex medical decision making, and making clinical recommendations. A thorough understanding and skill in literature evaluation and evidence-based practice principles is required for this experience.
2. Medication Policy / Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee Support. The resident will play a key role in pharmacy and therapeutics committee support with affiliated institutions and other organizations. The resident will work independently and collaboratively with Doctor of Pharmacy rotation students to develop and present formulary monographs, therapeutic class reviews, and other medical policy activities.
3. Teaching & Education. Teaching is a core component of the residency. The resident will receive an academic appointment as Instructor of Pharmacy Practice. The resident will provide extensive advanced experiential training to Doctor of Pharmacy students during their required drug information rotation. The resident will have opportunities to teach in a didactic setting in for the course Literature Evaluation & Evidence-Based Practice and other courses.
4. Research. The resident will work collaboratively on research projects conducted through the Center for Drug Information & Evidence-Based Practice. A variety of research opportunities are available in the areas of clinical practice in drug information, scholarship of teaching and learning, meta-analysis and systematic reviews, and others. The resident will complete a minimum of one research project suitable for publication during the residency period.

1. Teaching Certificate. The resident will participate in the required teaching certificate program offered at Creighton University. This longitudinal program will help develop foundational skills in curriculum development and teaching.
2. Evidence-Based Practice Certificate. The fellow will complete the required evidence-based practice certificate through the Center for Drug Information & Evidence-Based Practice. The program is intended to provide the foundational knowledge for evidence-based medical decision making including modules covering biostatistics, hypothesis testing, research design, developing a research protocol, and conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis.
3. Other. A variety of other opportunities are available throughout the residency year. Seminars on grant writing, leadership, research design, and others are available. Participation in these programs will be dependent on the interests of the resident and availability.

The fellow will work collaboratively on research conducted through the Center for Drug Information & Evidence-Based Practice. The fellow may also have the opportunity to work with researchers outside the Center. The fellow will gain experience developing grant proposals, research project proposals, project planning and implementation, data collection and analysis, and development of scholarly manuscripts.

The Center for Drug Information & Evidence-Based Practice at Creighton University offers a unique 2-year research fellowship program with an emphasis in natural medicines research. As a research fellowship, up to 75% of the program is dedicated to research. The remaining 25% focuses on clinical practice in the area of drug information and evidence-based practice. The program offers an intensive, rewarding experience developing research skills related to natural medicines, dietary supplements and alternative health practices. The fellow will gain experience primarily in the area of research synthesis including systematic review and meta-analysis. There will also be opportunities for experiences in the areas of survey design, educational research, medication policy, drug information, evidence-based practice, grant writing, teaching, medical/scholarly writing, and others.

The fellow will work collaboratively on research projects conducted through the Center for Drug Information & Evidence-Based Practice with a focus on natural medicines, dietary supplements and alternative health practices. A variety of research opportunities are available in the areas of meta-analysis and systematic review, drug information and medication policy, scholarship of teaching and learning, and others. The fellow may also have the opportunity to work with researchers outside the Center including those in the Cardiac Center, the Osteoporosis Research Center, or in other Creighton University-affiliated Centers and laboratories. The Fellow will complete a minimum of two independent research projects and well as serve as a co-investigator on other research projects with Center faculty. The fellow will gain experience developing grant proposals, research project proposals, project planning and implementation, data collection and analysis, and development of scholarly manuscripts.
- Drug Information Consultation Service. The fellow will become a competent practitioner in the area of drug information clinical practice by participating in the day-to-day operations and management of the drug information consultation service. - Teaching & Education. Teaching is a core component of the fellowship in natural medicines research. The fellow will receive an academic appointment as Instructor of Pharmacy Practice. The fellow will provide extensive advanced experiential training to Doctor of Pharmacy students during their required drug information rotation. The fellow will also have opportunities to teach in a didactic setting in for the course Literature Evaluation & Evidence-Based Practice and other courses.
Training Programs / Certificates
- Teaching Certificate. The fellow will participate in the required teaching certificate program offered at Creighton University. This longitudinal program will help develop foundational skills in curriculum development and teaching.
- Evidence-Based Practice Certificate. The fellow will complete the required evidence-based practice certificate through the Center for Drug Information & Evidence-Based Practice. The program is intended to provide the foundational knowledge for evidence-based medical decision making including modules covering biostatistics, hypothesis testing, research design, developing a research protocol, and conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis.
