Creighton & Community at the Highlander

Creighton’s School of Law operates its Juvenile Justice Legal Clinic (JJLC) monthly at Creighton & Community at the Highlander. The JJLC operates like a small law firm staffed by Creighton University third-year law students under the guidance of supervising attorneys. The clinic provides free legal services for youth ages 11–19 with open cases in the separate Douglas County Juvenile Court. The JJLC works in partnership with Creighton Community Connections.

Creighton Community Connections, another program of the University’s School of Law, builds one-on-one relationships with young people and families to help them access resources available in the community. Community Connections employees can help connect families with educational resources, mental health resources, food and housing stability, parenting support, activities and sports, and more.

Creighton’s five federally funded TRIO programs work with students across the educational spectrum: 800 middle school students, 200 high school students, 160 Creighton students and nearly 1,000 adult learners. Each week at Creighton & Community at the Highlander, TRIO staff work with middle and high school students to provide academic support including tutoring, college search and preparation, career exploration and personal development opportunities including leadership skills, cultural activities and giving back. Another TRIO program helps displaced or underemployed adults prepare for the GED exam, build resumes and search for jobs.

The Cura Project is a program and study collaboration between the School of Pharmacy and Health Professions and CHI Health. It assists Omahans with Type II Diabetes who are struggling to afford healthy eating. The program provides support through financial coaching, health lifestyle coaching, groceries and access to a financial social worker.  Read a story about the program.

The Creighton Community Collaborative (CCC) is an endeavor to support initiatives focused on improving overall health for Medicaid and other vulnerable populations by reducing gaps in social determinants of health. The collaborative reflects a partnership between Creighton and Nebraska Medicaid managed care organizations (MCOs). The collaborative is guided by a steering committee representing each school/college at Creighton University. Collaborative participant programs are chosen by the CCC in collaboration with the MCOs. Efforts target a range of initiatives, including reducing food and/or housing insecurity, improving access to healthcare, expanding pediatric preventive oral health services, supporting addiction recovery and other efforts targeting health-related social needs.

Creighton’s Child Safety Center, located at the Highlander, helps keep kids in our community safe. Families and caregivers can find resources like hands-on training, car seat fittings and safe infant sleep training. We also offer a variety of free or low-cost safety equipment plus tips and resources to get safety conversations going at home.
