Paramedic Preparation Course for Healthcare Professionals

This course offers an accelerated pathway for experienced healthcare professionals seeking to advance their practice as paramedics through a competency-based curriculum. The program is structured in three phases:

  • Phase I: Preparatory coursework and online pre-work to establish foundational knowledge
  • Phase II: An intensive two-week, in-person lab and lecture on Creighton's Omaha campus focused on advanced psychomotor skills, clinical integration and critical decision-making
  • Phase III: The capstone internship, where students complete a comprehensive field experience demonstrating team leadership and clinical proficiency. During this final phase, students must successfully perform a minimum number of team leads, serving as the lead paramedic responsible for patient assessment, treatment and scene management, culminating in eligibility for national paramedic certification and state licensure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which types of healthcare professionals can apply?

This course is designed for registered nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and physicians. It is not intended for allied health professionals such as respiratory therapists or physical therapists. To be eligible for admission, you also need an active EMT certification.

What counts toward the two-year experience requirement?

The course is intended to build upon at least two years of experience as a clinician in acute care settings, such as intensive care units and emergency departments. Time spent as a student does not count toward the requirement. And while prior EMS experience adds weight to your application, it does not count toward this requirement.

Will this course help me become a licensed paramedic in my state?

Creighton cannot stay current with EMS regulatory changes in all states, so all prospective and enrolled students are strongly encouraged to consult with their state’s EMS office regarding this course. When all the program requirements have been met, you will be eligible to test for National Registry certification and seek licensing in Nebraska, if desired.

Learn more about National Registry reciprocity and State EMS office contacts.

Can I complete field time back at home?

As part of this course, you must complete at least 40 patient encounters where you serve as the lead paramedic in charge of care (known as “team lead contacts” in EMS training). You will have opportunities to complete some team lead contacts while on campus, but you will need to facilitate a program agreement with a service back home or return to Omaha later to complete your remaining patient contacts.

All prospective and enrolled students are strongly encouraged to consult with their state’s EMS office regarding this course. Also, since this program is in Nebraska, most other states consider you as an out of state student.

Will I need to find my own lodging and transportation while in Omaha?

Yes. You will need to secure your own lodging while you are in Omaha. Student housing is not available, but there are several hotel and lodging options near our campus. We recommend having your own vehicle while in Omaha, which will make it much easier to get to your field sites. Public transportation is not a reliable option for traveling to and from campus and field sites.

Lodging recommendations.

Will I need to pay for parking on campus?

Yes. Students are responsible for purchasing and properly displaying a parking permit while on campus.
