Paramedic Program

Complete the paramedic training program at Creighton University’s College of Nursing, where nationally recognized EMS training meets innovative, hands-on learning. 

Creighton’s intensive 11-month program consists of:

  • Approximately 390 hours of classroom lecture
  • 120 hours of lab/simulation
  • 675 hours of practicum time
  • The paramedic program is offered on-site at Creighton's Omaha campus

After completing the program, you’ll be eligible to take the National Registry of EMTs certification exam.

Details About the Paramedic Program

The paramedicine program is designed to prepare you with the knowledge, hands-on skills and professional mindset needed to become a successful paramedic. Upon completion, you will meet the eligibility requirements for testing and certificate procedures as established by the National Registry of EMTs. As a graduate, you’ll be ready to deliver high-quality care and perform confidently in real-world settings.

The program is offered on our Omaha campus, and since 2023, we have partnered with the City of Omaha to offer the paramedic program specifically for Omaha firefighters.   

What You’ll Study

Courses in the program are offered as credit or noncredit.* Topics covered in the program include (but are not limited to):

  • Advanced patient assessment
  • Airway management and ventilation
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Cardiology
  • Disaster response
  • EMS operations
  • Ethics
  • Fundamentals of paramedicine
  • Obstetrics
  • Pediatrics
  • Pharmacology
  • Pulmonology
  • Trauma 
     

*The courses in the paramedic program are also included in the curriculum for the Bachelor of Science in Paramedicine.  

Students who are completing this course of training as part of the Bachelor of Science in Paramedicine program must take the courses for credit.  

Admission Requirements for the Paramedic Program

To apply, you must have a current EMT certification (state or national) in good standing, along with a valid CPR certification at the healthcare provider or professional rescuer level. Along with your application, you will need to supply your high school or college transcripts, resume, a short essay and at least two references (possible recommenders include an instructor, professional colleague or employer).

You will also need:

  • A copy of your driver’s license or other government-issued photo ID.
  • A comprehensive certified background check, completed by a vendor Creighton chooses; instructions will be provided in your post-acceptance welcome package.*
  • To be in compliance with the immunization requirements for Creighton Health Sciences students. Instructions for submitting immunization information will be provided in your acceptance materials. Review our immunization requirements.
  • A reliable laptop that can be used throughout the program. View our technology requirements and recommendations.

*If you have already completed this process within the past 12 months as a Creighton EMT student, you do not need to do another background check.

Paramedic Certificate Program Costs

The total, inclusive of tuition and associated University fees, for this program is $10,500.* Payment is due in full 60 days before the course start date. A payment plan is available for students enrolled in the program for certification preparation only (i.e., not students seeking certification as part of the Bachelor of Science in Paramedicine program). Other variable expenses include:

  • Textbooks
  • Certification exam fee
  • Uniform
  • Immunizations (if immunizations aren’t current)
  • Required background check and drug screen
  • Parking pass for on-campus parking


*Students registering for college credit will be billed at the current credit hour rate. The cost of tuition is subject to change.

Career Paths for Paramedic Certificate Holders

After completing the program, you’ll be eligible to site for the National Registry EMT certification exam, which can lead to a variety of career paths. Graduates commonly pursue careers such as:

  • 911 paramedic with municipal, fire-based, or third-service EMS
  • Emergency department paramedic or ED Technician in hospital settings
  • Event or on-site paramedic (stadiums, manufacturing, remote sites)
  • Correctional health paramedic in jail/prison medical units
  • EMS communications or dispatcher roles

How is this paramedic program different from a degree?

This is an intensive set of courses designed to prepare students for national certification and licensure as paramedics. Unlike a degree program, which includes broader academic coursework, this certificate-preparation program focuses solely on the essential knowledge and skills required for emergency medical services.

How long does it take to complete the paramedic program?

The program spans approximately 11 months and includes around 390 hours of classroom lectures, 120 hours of lab/simulation and 675 hours of practicum experience.

Is the program accredited and recognized for licensure?

Yes, it is accredited by CAAHEP upon the recommendation of CoAEMSP and approved by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services. Note that other states may have different requirements.

What career opportunities are available after completing the program?

Graduates are eligible for the NREMT paramedic exams and can work in ambulance services, fire departments, hospitals and other healthcare settings.

Can I work while enrolled in the program?

Some students do work while taking part in this program, but given the intensive nature of it, working full time while enrolled may be challenging.
