Academic Excellence and Clinical Competence
Clinical competence and academic excellence are attained by giving graded responsibility to the resident through exposure to all areas of obstetrics and gynecology under the direct supervision of board certified specialists and sub-specialists present in the department 24 hours a day. There is a strong emphasis on teaching. Senior residents actively participate in mentoring junior residents. Faculty members direct learning through didactic, experiential, research and small group and individual.

Research
Research and scholarly activity are supported by the program. Residents participate in a directed longitudinal research curriculum during PGY-1. Early in the intern year residents are assigned to a group for development of their required residency research project, group meetings are part of the intern curriculum and mentored by faculty who are seasoned researchers. Dr. Dean Coonrod, MD, MPH, is the director of research programs and also oversees our journal club series in statistics and research design, the journal club series takes place every other year. Residents have had research accepted at a wide range of academic events including local programs and national programs such as annual meetings of the Western Association of Gynecologic Oncologists, the North American Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology, the Pacific Coast Ob/gyn Society, the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists and the annual meeting for the Society of Gynecologic Oncology.
Ambulatory Clinics
We prepare our residents to manage all aspects of ambulatory care including primary and preventive care for women, routine and high-risk obstetrics, management of common gynecologic conditions and experience in subspecialty area such as REI and gynecologic oncology. Residents have exposure to a wide range of in-office procedures including office hysteroscopy, MVA for incomplete and missed abortion, colposcopy and LARC placement.
