Join us for a rare and timely conversation at the intersection of cutting‑edge genetic medicine and ethics, presented as part of the Lori Schweickert Medical Humanities Lecture Series on ethical questions raised by emerging medical technologies. Kevin FitzGerald, SJ, PhD, PhD, will moderate a panel featuring Sadik Kassim, PhD and Timothy Hunt.
Sadik Kassim, PhD, CSO/CTO of Genomic Medicines for Danaher's Life Sciences, was directly involved in the groundbreaking, personalized gene‑editing treatment developed for Baby KJ Muldoon. This medical milestone captured international attention and offered new hope for children with rare genetic diseases. Kassim and Timothy Hunt, CEO of the Alliance for Regenerative Medicine, are working with the Vatican’s Pontifical Academy for Life to establish ethical guardrails for emerging genetic technologies and to address one of the most urgent challenges in the field: equitable global access to therapies that currently cost between $500,000 and $4 million per patient.
The panel will explore what these new technologies make possible and the ethical, moral and religious questions raised by gene editing, personalized medicine and the commercialization of life‑altering treatments. CE credit will be available.
