CIPER Associate Spotlight: Cary Moore

“Through the CIPER Associates and Scholars Program, I developed a course entitled: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD): Best Practices in Alaska. This interdisciplinary, foundational course is designed to introduce students within the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) College of Health (COH) to Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) . Within the framework of the Interprofessional Education Collaborative Core Competencies (IPEC; 2016), students are introduced to seven essential competences on FASD including: foundational concepts, prevention strategies (alcohol use screening & brief intervention) information on alcohol use disorders, teratogenic effects of alcohol on a developing fetus, current strategies for FASD-related risk identification/ screening and diagnosis, treatment across the lifespan for individuals who experience FASD and ethical, legal, and policy considerations. This course supplements the discipline specific knowledge of health programs and aims to equip UAA students as future health care professionals in caring for individuals who experience FASD. The course has completed the UAA curriculum review process and received the College of Health Interdisciplinary (COHI) designation. Similarly, two of the four assignments in the course are certified passport activities for Creighton OTD students in the Alaska pathway. Information on the course has been disseminated at two conferences as highlighted below:
- Miller, V., & Moore, C., (2022). Interdisciplinary approaches to Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD): Best practices in Alaska. [Poster session]. Alaska Health Summit Virtual Conference.
- Miller, V., Moore, C., Henderson, M., Pierce-Bulger, M. (2021). Interdisciplinary approaches to Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD): Best practices in Alaska. [Poster session]. Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) Virtual Conference.”
