Phoenix Health Sciences Campus
Four-Year Medical School in Phoenix Is Now Open
Creighton University School of Medicine students have the opportunity to live and learn on two campuses – one in Omaha and one in Phoenix, Arizona. A full four-year medical school campus will open in Phoenix in 2021. Phoenix is also home to a number of residency and fellowship programs through the Creighton University Arizona Health Education Alliance.
For more than a decade, Creighton has had an academic presence in Phoenix, sending medical students to Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center for clinical rotations. That relationship expanded in 2009 when the University and St. Joseph’s formally established a Creighton campus for third- and fourth-year students. In 2018, it was announced that Creighton would expand once again—this time opening a full four-year medical school campus in Phoenix to become one of the largest Catholic health professions educators in the nation.
The 195,000-square-foot Phoenix campus opened in 2021 at Park Central in midtown Phoenix. By 2025, the campus will be home to nearly 1,000 health sciences students, including medical, nursing, occupational and physical therapy, pharmacy and physician assistant. In addition, the Creighton University School of Medicine is the institutional sponsor for some 325 residents and fellows in GME programs hosted at St. Joseph’s and Valleywise.
Creighton’s infusion of health professionals comes at a crucial time for Arizona, which faces a boom in population and a shortfall of physicians, nurses and other medical professionals. By 2030, the state is expected to have just one primary care doctor for every 1,500 people and a projected shortage of 50,000 nurses.
Since Creighton began its presence in Phoenix, a growing number of Creighton-educated physicians have stayed in Arizona for their residency programs. Creighton also has a large network of health sciences alumni throughout the state.
Whether you learn in Omaha or Phoenix, the education you receive at Creighton will prepare you for placement into prestigious residencies in highly competitive fields throughout the country.
