Dear Colleagues:

Welcome to the Creighton University Department of Medicine. Creighton has a long history of excellence in the tripartite mission of clinical care, teaching and research. This mission has synergy with Creighton’s core values of service to others, leadership, and community. You will often hear the phrase “cura personalis” which refers to the care and development of the whole person and serves as a foundation in the department for all learners (students, residents, fellows), faculty, and staff. Creighton strives for excellence or “magis”, another core value.
The Department consists of 11 divisions spanning the breadth of internal medicine. We represent the largest department in the School of Medicine and contribute significantly to both undergraduate and graduate medical education. There are 250 faculty and 120 residents and fellows in our training programs. The Department continues to grow our academic and clinical divisions. Several new fellowship programs include Hospice and Palliative Medicine and Advanced Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. Future fellowships in the next several years will be Sleep Medicine, Rheumatology, and Hematology-Oncology. A first in the nation ACGME accredited rural track and an internal primary care option are integral parts of the residency program. In June 2026, the first cohort of the Omaha-Kearney (Nebraska) rural track program will complete their training. Our facilities and resources are significant including our academic medical center, Creighton University Medical Center (Bergan-Mercy) which has been our core hospital since 2017 and a dedicated on-site education building. Creighton is partnered with CHI Health, a large regional healthcare system and our clinical partner. CHI Health is part of the national organization, CommonSpirit Health, which is one of the largest systems in the country. The partnership between Creighton and CHI is vital to the mission and strategy of our organizations. This alliance creates an outstanding clinical and educational experience.
As an academic medical center, scholarship and teaching are an integral part of the Creighton mission. The benefits of scholarship for residents and fellows are numerous and include exploration of clinical interests, professional development and interaction with faculty mentors. The Department has produced on average about 250 publications annually over the past 4 years. Training at Creighton will help solidify teaching skills through experiences, including leading medical teams. Our goal is to help learners become outstanding clinicians, educators and scholars that are prepared for academic or private sector careers in primary care or subspecialty based-medicine. We value diversity and wellness and the success of our learners and faculty.
The Omaha, Nebraska region is located in the heart of the Midwest and is a vibrant economic center with multiple companies in the Fortune 500 and 1000. The population is nearly 1 million and is diverse and growing. Creighton, CHI and the Department of Medicine encourage you to consider joining our team as we continue our mission to serve, heal, educate, learn and advance the field of medicine.
