Creighton president named chair of BIG EAST Board of Directors
The Rev. Daniel S. Hendrickson, SJ, PhD, president of Creighton University, has been elected to a two-year term as chair of the BIG EAST Conference Board of Directors. He will begin his term on June 30. The Board of Directors is comprised of the presidents of the BIG EAST’s 11 member institutions.
Fr. Hendrickson succeeds the Rev. Peter M. Donohue, OSA, president of Villanova University, in the BIG EAST chair role. Fr. Hendrickson’s appointment was announced following the spring meeting of the board in New York on June 2.
Fr. Hendrickson has served since 2015 as Creighton’s 25th president. He was elected to the Creighton Board of Trustees in 2013. He also serves on the Boards of Trustees at Boston College, Xavier University, and Jesuit Worldwide Learning based in Geneva, Switzerland.
At the meetings, Commissioner Val Ackerman and the presidents reaffirmed their commitment to basketball excellence as the BIG EAST enters its 10th season since its reconfiguration in 2013. This past year, the conference completed its 43rd year as a league and conducted its 40th BIG EAST Men’s Basketball Tournament at Madison Square Garden.
Primary discussion topics at the meeting included NCAA governance matters, the current national collegiate landscape, NIL, transfers, national television coverage, men’s and women’s basketball matters, diversity/equity/inclusion, mental health, and plans for the 2022-2023 season.
John J. DeGioia, PhD, president of Georgetown University, currently serves as chair of the NCAA Board of Governors and is a member of the Division I Board of Directors. He and Greg Christopher, director of athletics at Xavier University, provided updates to the board on the work of the NCAA Transformation Committee, of which both are members.
