Health Insurance Requirements

Insurance for a Healthy Campus

As explained in the Creighton University Student Handbook, the University requires that all full-time students (12 credits/semester for undergraduates, 8 for graduate students) are covered by a comprehensive health insurance plan for the entire academic year. New and returning students are auto-enrolled in the University-sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan, and the premium for annual coverage is split evenly between the fall and spring semesters. Take a look at the plan summary to learn about eligibility, how to enroll, benefits, cost and dates. Enrollment may be waived if a student has existing health insurance coverage.

Waiving University-Sponsored Coverage

You may be able to waive the University-sponsored health insurance plan coverage if you already have a comprehensive insurance plan, with coverage that’s currently active and maintained for the entire school year (including the summer). Additional requirements include:

  • National coverage for inpatient and outpatient medical care*
  • National coverage for inpatient and outpatient mental health care
  • An unlimited lifetime maximum

After you register for classes and the university-sponsored insurance charge is posted to your tuition account, you may complete the online waiver process. If your request is not approved by the deadline for the current semester, you will be enrolled in the university-sponsored plan. If you have issues completing the waiver form, you may try completing it in a different web browser or request assistance.

The annual online waiver process closes on September 5, 2025, (the site will reopen in December for new spring-semester students). If no waiver is approved at the beginning of the fall semester, the student will be enrolled for annual coverage. The premium for the University-sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan will remain on the student’s account unless the waiver process is completed before the deadline.

*Coverage for only emergency and urgent care does not satisfy the requirement for a waiver. Nebraska Medicaid Exception.

Lapses in Students’ Own Coverage

When the Student Health Education and Compliance Office becomes aware of a lapse in a student’s own health insurance coverage, they will be automatically enrolled in the university-sponsored plan, and their tuition statement will reflect a charge for the entire premium. This includes students turning 26.
