The Institute works to increase the Creighton community's understanding of population health, facilitate cross-disciplinary collaboration and raise visibility for faculty, staff and learners engaged in population health and health equity efforts. Efforts include faculty grant opportunities and professional development funding, research and evaluation support, a health equity research group, a health policy lecture series, and opportunities for students to engage in service and research.
The President's Fund in Population Health invests in faculty efforts to improve the health and wellbeing of communities. Since 2024, the IPH has funded 13 faculty-led projects committed to advancing health equity in partnership with community.
The Population Health Collective (PHC) is a community of scholars and advocates from across Creighton’s schools and colleges that come together to collaborate with, mentor and support peers improving population health. Members of the collective have opportunities to apply for professional development funds and seed grants to support projects aimed at improving health and health equity.

The IPH hosts a monthly online meeting for faculty and students that spotlights current faculty efforts to improve health equity through research and evaluation.
The CommonSpirit Health LEAD Scholars program focuses service-learning and training on leadership, health equity, advocacy and community engagement. This pilot program is overseen by IPH in partnership with clinical and educational leaders in Phoenix and kicked off in fall 2024.
In 2025, IPH partnered with the Kingfisher Institute to host the Envisioning Population Health Student Photo Contest. The contest invited students from across Creighton’s schools and colleges to creatively explore factors that influence individual and community health and wellbeing, with submissions organized across three categories: mental health and wellbeing, planetary health and social determinants of health.
“The thoughtful and creative entries we received reflect our students’ growing understanding of population health and how they can positively influence the health and well-being of others—locally and globally,” said Scott Shipman, MD, MPH, IPH executive director and CyncHealth Endowed Professor of Population Health.

Population health management is a team endeavor, requiring the alignment of diverse perspectives and expertise to improve health equity and access to healthcare. The Multicultural and Community Affairs (MACA) department at Creighton University School of Medicine promotes culturally responsive education, community-engaged scholarship and initiatives that address health disparities in diverse and underserved communities. MACA helps prepare future health professionals to advance inclusion, justice and improved population health.
The Arrupe Global Scholars & Partnerships program is a partially funded, five-year MD/MPH dual-degree for students focused on global health and health equity. Through five fully funded international immersions in marginalized communities, scholars deepen their understanding of health disparities, public health systems and the social factors that shape patient outcomes.
For more than 50 years, Creighton has offered programs in the Dominican Republic that foster global perspective and service-based learning. Through its longstanding partnership with the Centro de Educación para la Salud Integral (CESI), also known as Misión ILAC, Creighton provides dental, medical, nursing, pharmacy, law, physical therapy, occupational therapy, undergraduate and high school students opportunities to learn through service.
