A message from the Program Director
Thank you for your interest in the Creighton University School of Medicine – Phoenix Gastroenterology Fellowship.
Each year, we offer two fellowship positions through the NRMP in our three-year, ACGME-accredited program. Fellows train across three primary sites: Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, Valleywise Health, and Chandler Regional Medical Center. St. Joseph’s and Valleywise serve as our primary high-volume, high-acuity hubs, exposing fellows to the full spectrum of gastroenterology—from bread-and-butter clinical care to complex tertiary and transplant cases. Chandler Regional adds a rich, community-based practice dimension, rounding out a comprehensive procedural and clinical experience.
Our program is rooted in a remarkable historical legacy. St. Joseph’s was founded in 1895 by the Sisters of Mercy to serve those most in need. Valleywise Health traces its origin to 1877 as Maricopa County’s safety-net provider and Arizona’s only public teaching hospital. Both institutions predate Arizona statehood and share a foundational principle: care must be accessible to everyone. Today, that safety-net mission continues to shape our fellowship. Here, medicine isn't abstract—it is personal, urgent, and deeply human.
As a Creighton University program, we embrace the Jesuit principle of cura personalis—care for the whole person. In fellowship, this means cultivating not only procedural mastery and diagnostic acumen, but also judgment, integrity, humility, and resilience. We believe clinical excellence is forged over time, and that exceptional gastroenterologists are defined as much by their character as by their skill.
Our faculty are dedicated educators who prioritize active mentorship, offering fellows high procedural volume alongside genuine autonomy. We aim to train gastroenterologists who will become leaders, educators, and compassionate clinicians in their own right—all within a supportive culture that values hard work, camaraderie, and high standards.
