Intensive English Language Institute Courses NEW

Eight Ways We Build Academic English

The Intensive English Language Institute (IELI) curriculum includes eight core courses across two levels of English proficiency, from high-intermediate to advanced. Students receive 20 hours per week of instruction in reading, writing, grammar, and listening and speaking.

Instructors introduce new language concepts through short lectures and provide ample opportunities for individual, pair and small-group activities that allow students to practice, apply and expand their skills. Textbooks, adapted texts, authentic materials and student projects are incorporated throughout.

Courses

IELI’s core courses are designed to build academic English proficiency across key skill areas needed for university-level study. View achievement descriptors for courses and levels.

Reading: 5 hours per week

These courses help students develop proficiency in a range of academic reading skills, including making predictions, skimming, scanning, identifying main ideas, reading for detail, building vocabulary, making inferences, summarizing and engaging in critical thinking. Classroom discussions and exercises give students opportunities to share, analyze and debate ideas drawn from texts.

Writing: 5 hours per week

Writing courses focus on developing the skills needed for effective academic writing. Instruction emphasizes the writing process, with attention to paragraph and essay development. Students practice writing clear, concise and accurate communications, while building confidence and proficiency in summary writing, paraphrasing and quoting.

Grammar: 5 hours per week

Grammar courses provide explicit instruction and practice in the form and use of English verb tenses, articles, clauses, subject-verb agreement, nouns, pronouns, modals and passive forms. Students apply correct grammar in speaking and writing exercises and error-correction activities.

Listening and Speaking: 5 hours per week

These integrated courses help students strengthen their oral communication skills in social and academic settings. Through role-plays, discussions and vocabulary-building activities, students develop speaking fluency. Lectures, debates and formal discussions support growth in listening comprehension, note-taking and critical thinking, while oral presentations build public speaking skills, effective body language and pronunciation.
