The Trauma service provides comprehensive care to injured, sick and critically ill surgery patients and consists of the separate Trauma, Surgical Critical Care and Emergency General Surgery rounding teams. Medical Students and Surgery Residents rotate on each service and support the ACS Verified Level I Trauma Center and the busy emergency room and serves as a referral center for the greater Omaha area, extending out to western Iowa, northern Kansas, southern South Dakota and all across Nebraska. The team conducts clinical research with the support of a full time PhD research coordinator, and participates in numerous multicenter studies from the main trauma surgery societies, and provides leadership to the NE State Committee on Trauma and the NE State Trauma Advisory Board, and regularly teaches the American College of Surgeons structured courses, ASSET, ATLS, ATCN, TNCC, ENPC, RTTDC and Stop the Bleed. The center is designated as a Chest Wall Injury Society Collaborative Center, and regularly takes regional referrals for chest wall injuries and reconstruction, and also performs all Acute Care/Emergency General Surgery at the Mercy Bergan/Creighton University Medical Center. The team is staffed by 9 board certified Trauma/Critical Care Surgeons and 11 APPs that provide 24/7 coverage and rarely goes on bypass to provide continuous support to the local community and the region.
