Study Abroad Costs and Financial Aid

Funding Educational Opportunities Abroad

Creighton is committed to helping students and their families understand and plan for the costs of studying abroad. Many of the scholarships and financial aid students receive for their education at Creighton may also apply to approved study abroad programs.

If you’re considering studying abroad, learning about both program costs and available financial aid can help you make informed decisions. You may find that study abroad opportunities are more financially accessible than you initially expected.

Establishing a Price Point

After scholarships and other financial aid are applied, it is helpful to understand the costs remain for you or your family to pay or fund through loans each semester. This remaining amount is your study abroad price point. Knowing your personal study abroad price point before meeting with a study abroad advisor can help focus the conversation and clarify which programs may be a good fit. With this information in mind, advisors can help guide you toward study abroad options that align with both your academic goals and budget.

Scholarships, Grants and Financial Aid

Eligible students who participate in approved study abroad programs may be able to use the aid they receive at Creighton while studying abroad.

  • Students in Creighton’s Service-Learning Program Abroad, Faculty-Led Programs Abroad, affiliate programs or other bilateral or multilateral exchange programs may continue to receive merit scholarships and grants awarded by Creighton.
  • Students who qualify for federal forms of financial aid may be able to apply those funds toward approved study abroad programs during the fall semester, spring semester or academic year.
  • Students who are eligible to receive state scholarships or other forms of financial aid may be able to use those funds while participating in approved study abroad programs.
  • Federal work-study does not apply to study abroad experiences.

Because eligibility varies by student and program, students are encouraged to consult with the Financial Aid Office to understand how their individual financial aid package may apply to studying abroad.

Tuition Remission

Students who are eligible for tuition remission or FACHEX benefits may be able to use those benefits for select pre-approved study abroad programs. Because tuition remission policies vary by program type, not all study abroad options are compatible with these benefits. The Global Engagement Office maintains information about which study abroad programs accept tuition remission or FACHEX benefits and can help students understand how these benefits may apply.

Students who choose programs not covered by tuition remission or FACHEX—including Faculty-Led Programs Abroad (FLPAs)—may be responsible for paying the difference between their employee benefit and the cost of the study abroad program.

Regardless of whether a program is compatible with tuition remission or FACHEX, students may still be responsible for additional fees, including standard University registration fees.

Students considering study abroad who plan to use tuition remission or FACHEX benefits are encouraged to consult with a global programs coordinator to discuss options and next steps.
