Every study abroad adventure begins by selecting a destination or program. Between making that choice and going abroad, students need to understand academic expectations, Creighton University policies and the support students receive while they’re away. Our comprehensive resources and guidance help ensure every student who studies abroad is as prepared as possible, so they’re positioned for a safe, meaningful educational and cultural experience.
To help students and their families prepare for study abroad experiences, Creighton has established a set of study abroad policies and procedures. These policies outline key information related to participation eligibility, program applications, selection and placement, charges and payment, and the overall study abroad process. They also describe expectations related to conduct, integrity, academics and safety while abroad. Students are encouraged to review the policies and procedures—even before applying for a study abroad program—and to share this information with their parents or family members.
Students are advised that refunds for students approved to study abroad are based on Creighton University’s official start date of the semester or term, not the host university’s. Therefore, if a student withdraws from their study abroad assignment after Creighton University’s official start date of the semester or term, tuition refunds will be posted according to the schedule published on the Student Account's Refund Policy regardless of whether the semester or term at the host university abroad has started.
Creighton University students earn academic credit for courses completed abroad through approved study abroad programs. Depending on the host institution, students typically enroll in a minimum of 12 to 15 U.S. credit hours each semester abroad. Completed courses transfer back to Creighton University with a letter grade and are factored into a student’s Creighton GPA. Students who participate in study abroad programs will receive details about how credits are awarded and how grades are processed upon program completion.
To help safeguard students, faculty and staff participating in study abroad programs, the Creighton Global Travel Security Program provides dedicated support while traveling abroad. Developed in partnership with AlertTraveler technologies, the program provides 24/7 support including access to the AlertTraveler mobile app. This resource delivers timely information related to safety, health and travel conditions, along with assistance during emergency situations. Students receive detailed information about the program and app as part of the preparation process prior to participating in a study abroad program.

As a part of the Creighton Global Travel Security Program, all study abroad students traveling abroad under the auspices of Creighton University are enrolled in international emergency medical insurance administered by the Global Engagement Office (GEO) for the duration of their time away from the United States. This coverage is through Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI).
The insurance policy selected by Creighton University for its students traveling abroad includes basic trip insurance that may cover a portion of additional costs due to trip cancellation, extreme flight delays, loss of luggage, etc. All travelers are encouraged to purchase additional flight or trip cancellation insurance from the airline or another company. The required supplemental insurance selected does not cover flight change costs due to outbreaks of disease (including, but not limited to H1N1 flu, COVID-19).
Students are asked to review the CISI travel insurance policy well before departing. Additionally, they can check with the international education office at their host institution about how to obtain local health insurance if they are able. Students should know how to file claims for reimbursements on healthcare expenses. In serious health emergencies, the local U.S. Embassy may be helpful. Once enrolled, students will have access to the myCISI Mobile App for emergency contact information, coverage details, claims assistance and more.
All travelers should maintain primary health insurance coverage while abroad. The travel insurance offered by the GEO is a supplemental policy. It is the responsibility of all travelers to check with the embassy/consulate of the host country to determine if travel insurance is required in order to obtain a visa to enter the host country. If needed for visa purposes, students can obtain a letter verifying their insurance policy by emailing JoEllenNewell@creighton.edu.
