Resident Assistant Professor

Tom is a Resident Assistant Professor of Theology at Creighton University and an Assistant Clinical Professor in the School of Medicine’s Department of Medical Humanities. Tom is a board certified chaplain, certified CPE Educator and ordained minister.

He directed the CPE Program at the Nebraska Medical Center from 2007 until 2012. He worked as a chaplain and CPE Program Developer from 2012 until 2017 at CHI Health Creighton University Medical Center - Bergan Mercy. He led CHI Health’s Department of Clinical Pastoral Education from 2017 until May 2023. As a CPE educator he has supervised seminarians, clergy and lay people preparing to become pastors and/or chaplains. A number of his students were physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals. His clinical chaplaincy experience includes behavioral health, cardiovascular, hospice, intensive care, medical-surgical, neonatal intensive care, nephrology, neurological sciences, obstetrics and gynecology, perinatal hospice, pediatrics, oncology, post-intensive care and solid organ transplant patient populations.

In addition to supervising CPE students, he has taught undergraduate and graduate medical students; nursing and social work students, lay ministers and Catholic deacons in formation. He teaches adult education classes and occasionally preaches at West Hills Church, where he has worshiped since 1999.

Tom holds a BA in Public Policy from Duke University (1987), a MDiv from Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary (1993), and an MA in Theology from Creighton University (2000). He is a student in Creighton’s Ed.D. program in Interdisciplinary leadership. In his spare time he enjoys going to the symphony, hiking in Colorado, and relaxing with a good book.
