Study abroad programs at Creighton University are designed to deepen academic learning while helping students grow as thoughtful, engaged global citizens. Through immersive experiences around the world, students develop cultural awareness that expands their knowledge, leadership skills and maturity.
Throughout these programs, students have opportunities to reflect on how their learning connects to service, justice and life beyond the classroom.
Current Creighton students who are exploring study abroad can start here (intranet login required).
Creighton partners with institutions around the world to offer high-quality study abroad opportunities for all Creighton students. Students may apply to study at one of our partner universities abroad, typically paying tuition and fees—and in some cases, room and board—to Creighton for the term. We call these Creighton-In programs. With Creighton-In partner programs, students can generally continue to use their Creighton scholarships and financial aid while studying abroad.
Creighton partners with ISEP (International Student Exchange Programs) to expand where students can study abroad—giving you access to dozens of additional universities worldwide beyond Creighton’s direct partners. There are two types of programs, ISEP Exchange and ISEP Direct:
Students participating in ISEP Exchange programs abroad for a semester or academic year may use their Creighton University awards and scholarships. These programs essentially function like a true exchange program. You remain a Creighton student financially and academically while studying abroad.
Best for: Affordability and staying “on track” with Creighton
ISEP Direct programs are considered non-Creighton programs for financial billing purposes. Tuition, room, board and fees for ISEP Direct programs are paid directly to the program provider—not to Creighton. Discounts and scholarships are not portable. This is more like an approved external program. You still get credit, but the financial model is different.
Best for: Flexibility and more program choices
For more than 50 years, Creighton University has had a presence in the Dominican Republic, offering programs centered on accessible healthcare and building community resilience. These initiatives are made possible through a close partnership with the Centro de Educación para la Salud Integral (CESI), our host organization. What began as a collaboration focused on immersive health service experiences has grown to include a range of initiatives, including Encuentro Domincano, our semester-long academic service-learning program.
If you are interested in a program outside of Creighton’s existing study abroad options, you must first check with your academic advisor and major department to determine whether they support the coursework offered through that program and at the host institution. If the department determines that the program provides a strong academic offering, they may communicate this recommendation to the Vice Provost of Global Engagement.
The deadline to work toward participation in a non-Creighton program option is one year prior to the start of the relevant study abroad term. For example, spring semester program proposals must be presented by January 15 of the prior year and fall semester proposals must be presented by August 15 of the prior year.
Processing non-Creighton program options requires significant time and includes verification of student support services, course accreditation and grade transferability. Tuition, room, board and fees for these programs are paid directly to the program provider—not to Creighton. Discounts and scholarships are not portable. If you have questions about this process, please contact the Global Engagement Office.
Creighton BSN students can study abroad without falling behind. The nursing curriculum is designed to make a semester abroad possible, so you can explore a new culture, take core or elective courses and still graduate on time. With programs around the world, you’ll find options that fit your academic plan and your goals.
Looking for something more hands-on? Many nursing students also choose global health and service-focused experiences, including immersion opportunities in the Dominican Republic. Wherever you go, you’ll gain a broader perspective on healthcare, build confidence and return with experiences that shape how you care for others.
Creighton offers two types of summer and break programs abroad: Faculty-Led Programs Abroad (FLPAs) and summer programs through Creighton-In and ISEP.
