Objectives
- Discuss which pediatric orthopedic injuries require urgent management.
- Review principles of long bone stabilization.
- Review pertinent physical examination findings & interpretation of pediatric orthopedic injuries.
- Identify resources to assist healthcare professionals with the medical management of poisonings and chemical exposures.
- Discuss the general management of acute poisoning exposures, including supportive care, decontamination, and antidotes.
- Describe the toxicity and treatment of selected chemical exposures which may be a threat in rural areas, including insecticides and irritant gasses.
- Review the basic physiologic changes associated with pregnancy.
- Review the current trauma guidelines for care of the injured pregnant patient.
- Discuss management of common obstetrical conditions managed in the emergency setting.
- Recognize the mechanism of injury of various agricultural emergencies.
- Discuss treatment and care for auger injuries.
- Discuss roles of successful trauma activation.
- Describe the common psychiatric emergencies in the emergency department setting.
- Describe what a suicide risk assessment is and how to use it.
- Discuss treatment options in the emergency department setting for specific psychiatric emergencies.
- Discuss blood components and the clotting cascade.
- Review classes of blood thinners, blood products, and reversal agents.
- Discuss massive transfusion protocol and thromboelastometry / thromboelastography.
