The Creighton University School of Law Student Exchange Program with our sister Jesuit law school in Spain, Universidad Pontifica Comillas de Madrid, gives Creighton students the opportunity to live and learn in Madrid—and to learn alongside Comillas students in their Creighton law classrooms.
Your Experience
The Spain Student Exchange Program gives you the opportunity to engage in serious study of law in one of Europe’s most exciting and historic cities. You’ll expand your opportunities for training in international and comparative law, particularly the laws of Spain and the European Union. While in Madrid, you’ll learn more about the Spanish people and their culture and artistic heritage. Because Madrid is centrally located, you can also visit other historic areas of Spain. Since Comillas hosts nearly 500 exchange students from 40 different countries each year, you’ll be exposed to a variety of different people and cultures.
Requirements
Only second- or third-year Creighton law students in good standing may participate in the Spain Student Exchange Program. The program is available to both English and Spanish speakers. Although many courses are taught in Spanish, several courses are offered in English. If you’re interested in the program, please email mkelly@creighton.edu (Professor Michael Kelly). Once you’re selected for participation, you’ll be assigned a faculty advisor who must approve your academic program and course selection. You’ll work with your faculty advisor to develop a written plan to define the educational objectives you want to achieve while studying at Comillas. Your advisor will monitor your coursework.
Objectives
Creighton law students participating in the Student Exchange Program will have the opportunity to:
- supplement their international and comparative and business law classes with classes not offered at Creighton
- interact with law students from another legal tradition
- understand the civil law system as a comparison to the common law system
- test American legal theories in a foreign legal culture
- learn from European law professors who emphasis different theoretical legal concepts than American law professors
Cost
You’ll pay regular tuition and fees at Creighton—not at Comillas. You’re responsible for all of your expenses, including room and board, travel, course materials, medical insurance and medical care, and any other personal expenses.
