Supporting Purposeful Behavior Change: SMART-EST Goals for Client Success (1 CEC)

  • Achieving optimal health and wellness is a lifelong journey that takes planning and partnership. Much like taking a road trip in a car, the journey is more successful with a roadmap to guide the way. Health and wellness coaches are in a unique position to help guide others towards their goals by offering roadmaps, proper planning, and effective goal setting. Identifying and co-creating client goals is the underpinning of a health and wellness coaching practice and is a key component to lasting behavior change. Creating SMART goals (specific, meaningful, action-based, realistic, and timely) is one approach to engage clients in the lifestyle behavior change process. This continuing education program will introduce the SMART-EST (evidence-based, strategic, and tailored) goal framework as a tool to support client health and well-being, review behavior stages of change, and explore the different types of goals clients may what to achieve.

The Use of Journaling in Your Health Coaching Practice (1 CEC)

  • Journaling has shown to be an effective strategy for behavior change and to improve overall well-being. It can be used as a tool for certain lifestyle activities such as recording dietary intake, participating in physical activity, and to document biometric data. Journaling as a form of reflection has also been used to improve happiness and has shown to be effective for certain chronic diseases as a method to reveal relatable patterns of symptoms. This continuing education program will look at the evidence supporting the use of various types of journaling as a behavior change tool as well as demonstrate various journaling tools that have been used in a successful health coaching practice. This program is intended to help health and wellness coaches improve their knowledge, skills, and outlook on the use of journaling as a behavior change tool within their coaching practice.

We Know What’s Best!!! Why Won’t They Listen??? Using Motivational Interviewing Principles to Resist the “Righting Reflex” for Health Coaches and Health Care Professionals 

  • The righting reflex is defined as “the tendency of practitioners to try and actively fix problems in their clients’ lives, and by doing so, reduce the risk of change”. Although stemming from a desire to help, arguing with, lecturing, or warning a client or patient is counterproductive to the spirit of motivational interviewing (MI) and does not lead to lasting behavior change. At its simplest form, MI is a method of communicating and working with others to illicit behavior change based on the concept that the individual is the expert on themselves and can uncover the strategies that work best in their lives. The concept of building a therapeutic, trusting relationship in which the practitioner and patient/client are partners is also critical to MI. This continuing education program will address the concept of ambivalence and explore evidence-based strategies to resist the “righting reflex” and embrace the MI principles of guiding, client/patient-centered motivation, empowerment, and authentic listening.
