3+1 Hastings College and Creighton College of Nursing

Creighton University College of Nursing and Hastings College have partnered to meet the needs of Nebraskans and students who are interested in pursuing careers in Nursing.

The 3+1 program allows students to get the full Hastings College experience for three years before starting Creighton’s Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program at CHI Health St. Francis in Grand Island.

Well-educated nurses are in high demand. As a bachelor’s prepared nurse, you’ll be presented with a myriad of career opportunities. 

The Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook projects a 26% increase in nursing positions created through 2020, reflecting more than 712,000 new nurse positions. Only 3 out of 5 nurses work in hospitals. Nurses also work in schools, correctional facilities, private companies, home health agencies, mental health settings, long-term care facilities, community health, government and social service agencies, and research.

What You'll Learn

Graduates earn two degrees in four years — a bachelor’s from Hastings College in biology-health systems and a bachelor’s in nursing from Creighton University.

Completion of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program prepares all students to:

  • Integrate respect for each person’s dignity, worth, and spiritual uniqueness into professional practice.
  • Synthesize knowledge and evidence from nursing and other disciplines to coordinate health care for diverse clients. 
  • Demonstrate clinical judgment and professional accountability that supports safe practice and quality client outcomes.
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively as a leader and advocate using diverse modalities.
  • Manage resources efficiently and effectively in the coordination and management of care.
  • Incorporate deliberate reflection, self-awareness, and values consciousness into a process of personal and professional formation. 
  • Integrate professional, legal and ethical standards into nursing practice.

Admissions Requirements

The applicant to this program must meet the following admission and progression criteria:

Admission Requirements for Admitted College Freshmen

  • A student’s minimum academic profile should be at least a 3.75 high school GPA
  • ACT Composite Score of at least 26 (SAT 1190: combined critical reading and math)


Progression Requirements

The following requirements must be met while enrolled in the Hastings College curriculum for guaranteed admission into the Creighton University College of Nursing accelerated BSN program.

  • Students must achieve a GPA of at least 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale at Hastings College. 
  • Students must complete the following 33-34 semester hours of prerequisite courses while at Hastings College and must carry a grade of “C” (2.0) or above to be accepted for transfer to Creighton. 

 

  1. Statistics (3 semester hours)
     
  2. Behavioral Sciences (9 semester hours)
    1. General Psychology (3 semester hours)
    2. General Sociology or Cultural Anthropology (3 semester hours)
    3. Developmental Psychology (3 semester hours). This course should cover the lifespan (from infancy through old age).
       
  3. Ethics (3 semester hours)
    1. Bioethics or Ethics (3 semester hours). The application of ethical theories to contemporary problems of human life; emphasizes the process of making ethical/moral judgments.
       
  4. Physical and Biological Sciences (18-19 semester hours)
    1. Microbiology (4 semester hours)
    2. Inorganic/General Chemistry (4 semester hours)
    3. Anatomy & Physiology (8 semester hours - this may be two combined courses or a human anatomy course and a human physiology course)
    4. Nutrition (2-3 semester hours)

 

* No more than two “C” grades in Hastings College science courses (BIOL 111, BIOL 113, CHM 111, CHM 113, BIOL 321, SCIE 313)

Please note that a block of 100 transfer credits from Hastings College is added to the student’s academic record at Creighton University after the student enrolls in the 12 month-month accelerated nursing curriculum.
