Temporary Withdrawal Re-Entry Process
Creighton University provides students the option to take a Temporary Withdrawal for medical, mental health, personal, or military obligations. The process and authority to grant a Temporary Withdrawal from Creighton University starts in the Dean’s office of a student’s school or college. Upon receiving a Temporary Withdrawal, the student’s school or college notifies the Office of Student Success to coordinate the re-entry process with the student as Student Life’s goal is to accompany the student as they transition back to campus.
In the case of a medical or mental health situation, after a student has received treatment, the process of re-entry to Creighton University can begin. This process includes connecting a student with Student Counseling Services and/or Student Health Services to develop a plan of support and care prior to registering and restarting classes. Step 1: Contact Dr. Wayne Young, Jr., Vice Provost, Student Success
The student should contact Dr. Young and ask to set up an appointment or conference call to discuss transitioning back to Creighton from his/her approved temporary withdrawal. Dr. Young will then work in concert with other University departments and the student’s school/college to determine if a student support plan is needed for the transition back to campus and class attendance. Some cases may need no further transition plan, others may require Steps 2 through 4.
Step 2: Ask Provider(s) for a Recommendation & Grant a Full Release
The student should ask his/her provider(s) to send a written recommendation to Student Counseling Services and/or Student Health Services. A student must give his/her approval for a full release. The written recommendation must be received by November 15th (for re-entry for the spring semester) or July 15th (for re-entry for the fall semester). Please reference the “Instructions for Mental Healthcare Providers” for this recommendation. Students are reminded to ask their provider(s) to send this written recommendation prior to contacting Student Counseling Services to schedule an assessment.
Step 3: Schedule an Assessment with Student Counseling Services
When a student has confirmed that his/her provider(s) have sent a written recommendation to Student Counseling Services and have approved for a full release to Student Counseling Services at Creighton University, the student should then please contact Student Counseling Services to schedule an assessment. Step 4: Meet with Student Life
One to two days after meeting with Student Counseling Services, you will meet with Desiree Nownes, Senior Director, Student Formation, or her designee, to complete a Student Life Student Support Plan. This meeting will be scheduled after a student meets with the Senior Director of Student Counseling Services or his/her designee. The Student Support Plan will include recommendations from Student Counseling Services and is an agreement between the University and the student. Students will be asked to agree to a student support plan and a limited release of information at this meeting.
Students have different start and end dates to their semesters and deadlines determined on a case by case basis.
