Do teams require tryouts? When/where are the tryouts?
Most clubs have tryouts to be part of the traveling roster. Some clubs will allow social members who participate in local activities with the team. Interested students should contact the current club president for more information.
Who coaches the club teams?
Teams are often coached by a student or staff volunteer. Some teams will hire external coaches, who are paid by the club through their dues.
What is the time commitment to join a club team?
Clubs recognize that students are students first. Students can expect to spend around six hours per week with their team, but this varies from club to club. Contact the club president for more information.
How long does a season last?
The length of the season and frequency of competitions depend on the sport. Upcoming competition dates can be found by searching for the team’s page in CUInvolved, or by contacting the club president.
How often do teams practice?
Teams typically practice between 2-4 times per week, but this varies from club to club. Contact the club president for more information.
Where and when do the teams travel?
Travel is dependent on the club and its schedule. Common travel locations include Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado, Illinois, and Wisconsin. Some clubs will travel further based on post-season eligibility. Do I need to move in early for the club teams or stay over the summer for training?
Clubs are not permitted to move in early or stay over the summer for club-related activities.
Do I need to buy my own equipment?
Yes, athletes need to provide their own equipment.
Are there fees or costs associated with joining the team?
All sport clubs have dues. Specific amounts can be found by contacting club presidents.
Can I start a new club? What resources are provided to students interested in starting a club?
Yes! Many new clubs are created every year. Baseball, fishing, quidditch, and golf all started within the past three years. If there is a club team that you would like to initiate, professional staff will guide you through the process.
How are club sports different than intramural sports?
Club Sports provide a higher level of competition than intramural sports. Club sports travel locally, regionally and nationally to compete.
Do I get to practice with the NCAA Division I team?
Although it’s rare, club teams may be invited to scrimmage their NCAA counterpart.
Can I participate in a club and move to Division I?
Decisions to move from club to NCAA level competition are at the discretion of the coach of the respective NCAA team. Students are not guaranteed an opportunity to meet with the coach of the NCAA team.
Do I get to miss class for my club schedule?
Club-related travel is not considered a university-sanctioned activity. Students should not expect to be excused for club travel. Students will need to work with their instructors on a case-by-case basis.
Do I get access to the athlete training center and other athlete benefits (tutoring, gear, etc.)?
No. Club sports participants have access to the two athletic facilities open to all students. Access to the NCAA Division I teams’ facilities and services is not provided.
Where can I keep my equipment?
Limited storage space is available in the recreational facilities. Most clubs rent external storage facilities in Omaha through their dues.
Do other students watch club games?
Yes, many club events are well attended by students and the local community.
