Become a Creighton Sports PT Resident.

Join a fast-paced, high-energy clinical immersion experience designed to kick-start your clinical specialization in sports physical therapy.

The Creighton University Sports Physical Therapy Residency develops new practitioners into confident sports PT clinicians. Residents receive quality clinical mentorship and advanced didactic instruction in sports physical therapy from experienced faculty.

Sports Residency Program Details

The 12-month residency program begins August 1 and ends July 31. You will be a salaried Creighton employee with benefits.

  • Residents complete 40+ hours of clinical practice, on-site venue sports coverage, laboratory teaching, specialty didactic curriculum, and a common curriculum with other residency and fellowship programs.
  • Professional licensure in the state of Nebraska is required.
  • Venue coverage opportunities in a wide variety of sports with exposure to athletes across the lifespan. Residents will work with local youth sports, high school sports, and Creighton University athletics including training room and on-field experiences.

*ABPTRFE has granted Creighton University Sports Physical Therapy Residency candidacystatus. Candidacy status signifies satisfactory progress toward accreditation. Achieving candidacy status is not an indication that ABPTRFE will grant initial accreditation. Participants who graduate from a program in candidacy status are not deemed to have completed an accredited program.

Sports PT Residency Program Outcomes

  • Identify and discuss foundational, behavioral, and clinical sciences and critical inquiry principles related to advanced clinical practice.
  • Demonstrate accurate performance of all elements of the patient management model (examination, evaluation, diagnosis, prognosis, intervention and outcomes) across the continuum of care related to advanced sports physical therapy practice.
  • Demonstrate proficient clinical reasoning skills necessary for advanced clinical practice.
  • Demonstrate professional behaviors and leadership related to scholarship, professional engagement and service to the community.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in teaching patients, peers and students.
  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully complete the Sports Physical Therapy Specialty Exam.

Mission and Goals

The program is committed to developing specialization in advanced sports clinical practice, teaching, and advocacy by providing advanced education and focused, ongoing mentorship in preparation of Physical Therapists who will become leaders in sports physical therapy practice and provide enhanced patient care.

  1. Exemplify excellence in sports physical therapy clinical practice.
  2. Utilize ongoing assessment and education to assure that clinical practice sites utilized for residents provide outstanding access to patients and mentors with expertise in sports physical therapy and care for athletes.
  3. Provide an innovative curriculum emphasizing clinical reasoning and excellence in teaching in sports physical therapy practice.
  4. Engage in patient advocacy, leadership, scholarship and service activities to address the needs of society.
  5. Prepare residents to pursue ABPTS certification in sports physical therapy.
  6. Achieve/maintain accreditation from ABPTRFE and demonstrate sustainability.
