Message from the Chief
Welcome to the Division of Gastroenterology at CHI Health Creighton University–Bergan Mercy Medical Center.
The Division of Gastroenterology was established more than 30 years ago under the leadership of Harry Jenkins, MD and until recently was under the leadership of Stephen Lanspa, MD, who was instrumental in the tremendous growth of the division.
The recruitment of four new faculty this year will bring the division to 10 full-time faculty members and four advanced medical practitioners. In addition, our ACGME-approved three-year gastroenterology fellowship began in 2016 with the recruitment of two fellows.
All faculty members are board-certified in gastroenterology and have sub-specialty training in the following areas:
- inflammatory bowel disease
- hepatology and liver transplantation
- motility, biliary and pancreatic diseases
- advanced endoscopy
In addition, our division has a close relationship with the H.T. Lynch, MD Hereditary Cancer Center and the Center for Clinical Transplantation at Creighton University.
Education is an integral component of our service in parallel with excellent patient care and research. In addition to providing core lectures to medical residents throughout their training, additional educational opportunities offered to medical residents and students during their gastroenterology rotation include:
- biweekly lectures and review questions
- monthly journal club
- weekly gastroenterology core lectures
- bimonthly combined gastroenterology/general surgery case presentations
- monthly pathology conferences
In-patient consultations are conducted at the following hospitals: Creighton University–Bergan Mercy Medical Center, Lakeside Medical Center and Immanuel Medical Center. In the future, we may also provide our services at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Our out-patient endoscopy center at Midlands hospital continues to thrive and remains one of the most competitive and cost-effective options for screening colonoscopies in the metropolitan area.
Thank you very much for your interest in our website and please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
Sandeep Mukherjee, MD
